On the third New Moon after the Israelis went out of the land of Egypt, on that very day, they came to the desert of Sinai. | 1On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt--on that very day--they came to the Desert of Sinai. |
They had set out from Rephidim and arrived at the desert of Sinai where they camped in the desert. Israel camped there in front of the mountain. | 2After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. |
Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain: "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and declare to the sons of Israel, | 3Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: |
You saw what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. | 4You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. |
And now if you carefully obey me and keep my covenant, you are to be my special possession out of all the peoples, because the whole earth belongs to me, | 5Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, |
but you are to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation to me.' These are the words you are to declare to the Israelis." | 6you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites." |
When Moses came, he summoned the elders of the people and told them everything that the LORD had commanded him. | 7So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded him to speak. |
All the people answered together: "We'll do everything that the LORD has said!" Then Moses reported all the words of the people back to the LORD. | 8The people all responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. |
The LORD told Moses, "Look, I'm coming to you in a thick cloud, so that the people may listen when I speak with you and always believe you." Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD. | 9The LORD said to Moses, "I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you." Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said. |
The LORD told Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. They must wash their clothes, | 10And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes |
and be ready for the third day, for on the third day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. | 11and be ready by the third day, because on that day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. |
You are to set boundaries for the people all around: 'Be very careful that you don't go up on the mountain or touch the side of it. Anyone who touches the mountain is certainly to be put to death. | 12Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, 'Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. |
No hand is to touch that person, but he is certainly to be stoned or shot; whether animal or person, he is not to live.' They are to approach the mountain only when the ram's horn sounds a long blast." | 13They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.' Only when the ram's horn sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain." |
When Moses went down from the mountain to the people, he consecrated the people, and they washed their clothes. | 14After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. |
He told the people, "Be ready for the third day; don't go near a woman." | 15Then he said to the people, "Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations." |
When morning came on the third day, there was thunder and lightning, with a heavy cloud over the mountain, and the very loud sound of a ram's horn. All the people in the camp trembled. | 16On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. |
Moses brought the people from the camp to meet God, and they stood at the base of the mountain. | 17Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. |
Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the LORD had come down in fire on it. Smoke went up from it like smoke from a kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently. | 18Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently. |
As the sound of the ram's horn grew louder and louder, Moses would speak and God would answer with thunder. | 19As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him. |
When the LORD came down on Mount Sinai to the top of the mountain, he summoned Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. | 20The LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up |
The LORD told Moses, "Go down and warn the people so they don't break through to look at the LORD, and many of them perish. | 21and the LORD said to him, "Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the LORD and many of them perish. |
Even the priests who approach the LORD must consecrate themselves. Otherwise, the LORD will attack them." | 22Even the priests, who approach the LORD, must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out against them." |
Moses told the LORD, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai because you warned us: 'Set boundaries around the mountain and consecrate it.'" | 23Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, 'Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.'" |
The LORD told him, "Go down, and come back up with Aaron, but the priests and the people must not break through to go up to the LORD. Otherwise, he will attack them." | 24The LORD replied, "Go down and bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the LORD, or he will break out against them." |
So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them. | 25So Moses went down to the people and told them. |
