John 16
ISV Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
International Standard VersionNew International Version
"I have told you this to keep you from falling away.1"All this I have told you so that you will not fall away.
You'll be thrown out of the synagogues. Yes, a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he's serving God. 2They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.
They'll do this because they haven't known the Father or me. 3They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
But I've told you this, so that when the time comes you'll remember that I told you about them. I didn't tell you this in the beginning, because I was still with you."4I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,
"But now I am going to the one who sent me. Yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 5but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
But because I have told you this, sorrow has filled your hearts. 6Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.
However, I'm telling you the truth. It's for your advantage that I'm going away, because if I don't go away, the Helper won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 7But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
When he comes, he will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment— 8When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:
of sin, because they don't believe in me; 9about sin, because people do not believe in me;
of righteousness, because I'm going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
and of judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 11and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
"I still have a lot to say to you, but you cannot bear it now. 12"I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
Yet when the Spirit of Truth comes, he'll guide you into all truth. He won't speak on his own accord, but he'll speak whatever he hears and will declare to you the things that are to come. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 14He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.
All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said, 'He will take what is mine and declare it to you.' 15All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you."
In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again."16Jesus went on to say, "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
At this point, some of his disciples asked each other, "What does he mean by telling us, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again,' and, 'because I am going to the Father'?" 17At this, some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"
They kept saying, "What is this 'in a little while' that he keeps talking about? We don't know what he means."18They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him a question, so he asked them, "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again'? 19Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you'll cry and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You'll be deeply distressed, but your pain will turn into joy. 20Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
When a woman is in labor she has pain, because her time has come. Yet when she has given birth to her child, she doesn't remember the agony anymore because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. 21A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
Now you are having pain. But I'll see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. 22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
On that day, you won't ask me for anything. Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, whatever you ask the Father for in my name, he will give it to you.23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
So far you haven't asked for anything in my name. Keep asking and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete."24Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
"I have said these things to you in figurative language. The time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly about the Father. 25"Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
At that time, you will make your requests in my name, so that I will have no need to ask the Father on your behalf, 26In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
because the Father himself loves you, and because you have loved me and believed that I came from God.27No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
I left the Father and came into the world. Now I'm leaving the world and going back to the Father."28I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
Jesus' disciples said, "Well, now you're speaking plainly and not using figurative language. 29Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
Now we know that you know everything and don't need to have anyone ask you any questions. Because of this, we believe that you have come from God."30Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? 31"Do you now believe?" Jesus replied.
Listen, the time is coming, indeed it has already come, when you will be scattered, each of you to his own home, and you will leave me all by myself. Yet I'm not alone, because the Father is with me. 32"A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
I have told you this so that through me you may have peace. In the world you'll have trouble, but be courageous—I've overcome the world!"33"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
