1"I have told you this to keep you from falling away.

1Ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα μὴ σκανδαλισθῆτε

2You'll be thrown out of the synagogues. Yes, a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he's serving God.

2ἀποσυναγώγους ποιήσουσιν ὑμᾶς ἀλλ’ ἔρχεται ὥρα ἵνα πᾶς ὁ ἀποκτείνας ὑμᾶς δόξῃ λατρείαν προσφέρειν τῷ Θεῷ

3They'll do this because they haven't known the Father or me.

3καὶ ταῦτα ποιήσουσιν ὅτι οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὸν Πατέρα οὐδὲ ἐμέ

4But I've told you this, so that when the time comes you'll remember that I told you about them. I didn't tell you this in the beginning, because I was still with you."

4ἀλλὰ ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἡ ὥρα αὐτῶν μνημονεύητε αὐτῶν ὅτι ἐγὼ εἶπον ὑμῖν ταῦτα δὲ ὑμῖν ἐξ ἀρχῆς οὐκ εἶπον ὅτι μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἤμην

5"But now I am going to the one who sent me. Yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'

5Νῦν δὲ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐρωτᾷ με Ποῦ ὑπάγεις

6But because I have told you this, sorrow has filled your hearts.

6ἀλλ’ ὅτι ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἡ λύπη πεπλήρωκεν ὑμῶν τὴν καρδίαν

7However, I'm telling you the truth. It's for your advantage that I'm going away, because if I don't go away, the Helper won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

7ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ τὴν ἀλήθειαν λέγω ὑμῖν συμφέρει ὑμῖν ἵνα ἐγὼ ἀπέλθω ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ ἀπέλθω ὁ Παράκλητος οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐὰν δὲ πορευθῶ πέμψω αὐτὸν πρὸς ὑμᾶς

8When he comes, he will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment—

8Καὶ ἐλθὼν ἐκεῖνος ἐλέγξει τὸν κόσμον περὶ ἁμαρτίας καὶ περὶ δικαιοσύνης καὶ περὶ κρίσεως

9of sin, because they don't believe in me;

9περὶ ἁμαρτίας μέν ὅτι οὐ πιστεύουσιν εἰς ἐμέ

10of righteousness, because I'm going to the Father and you will no longer see me;

10περὶ δικαιοσύνης δέ ὅτι πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα ὑπάγω καὶ οὐκέτι θεωρεῖτέ με

11and of judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

11περὶ δὲ κρίσεως ὅτι ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου κέκριται

12"I still have a lot to say to you, but you cannot bear it now.

12Ἔτι πολλὰ ἔχω ὑμῖν λέγειν ἀλλ’ οὐ δύνασθε βαστάζειν ἄρτι

13Yet when the Spirit of Truth comes, he'll guide you into all truth. He won't speak on his own accord, but he'll speak whatever he hears and will declare to you the things that are to come.

13ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας ὁδηγήσει ὑμᾶς ἐν* τῇ* ἀληθείᾳ* πάσῃ* οὐ γὰρ λαλήσει ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ ἀλλ’ ὅσα ἀκούσει* λαλήσει καὶ τὰ ἐρχόμενα ἀναγγελεῖ ὑμῖν

14He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

14ἐκεῖνος ἐμὲ δοξάσει ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ ἐμοῦ λήμψεται καὶ ἀναγγελεῖ ὑμῖν

15All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said, 'He will take what is mine and declare it to you.'

15πάντα ὅσα ἔχει ὁ Πατὴρ ἐμά ἐστιν διὰ τοῦτο εἶπον ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ ἐμοῦ λαμβάνει καὶ ἀναγγελεῖ ὑμῖν

16In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again."

16Μικρὸν καὶ οὐκέτι θεωρεῖτέ με καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με ⧼ὅτι ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πατέρα⧽

17At this point, some of his disciples asked each other, "What does he mean by telling us, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again,' and, 'because I am going to the Father'?"

17Εἶπαν οὖν ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ πρὸς ἀλλήλους Τί ἐστιν τοῦτο ὃ λέγει ἡμῖν Μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με καί Ὅτι ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα

18They kept saying, "What is this 'in a little while' that he keeps talking about? We don't know what he means."

18ἔλεγον οὖν Τοῦτο «τί ἐστιν» ὃ λέγει Τὸ μικρόν οὐκ οἴδαμεν τί λαλεῖ

19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him a question, so he asked them, "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again'?

19Ἔγνω [ὁ] Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἤθελον αὐτὸν ἐρωτᾶν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Περὶ τούτου ζητεῖτε μετ’ ἀλλήλων ὅτι εἶπον Μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με

20Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you'll cry and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You'll be deeply distressed, but your pain will turn into joy.

20ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι κλαύσετε καὶ θρηνήσετε ὑμεῖς ὁ δὲ κόσμος χαρήσεται ὑμεῖς λυπηθήσεσθε ἀλλ’ ἡ λύπη ὑμῶν εἰς χαρὰν γενήσεται

21When a woman is in labor she has pain, because her time has come. Yet when she has given birth to her child, she doesn't remember the agony anymore because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world.

21ἡ γυνὴ ὅταν τίκτῃ λύπην ἔχει ὅτι ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα αὐτῆς ὅταν δὲ γεννήσῃ τὸ παιδίον οὐκέτι μνημονεύει τῆς θλίψεως διὰ τὴν χαρὰν ὅτι ἐγεννήθη ἄνθρωπος εἰς τὸν κόσμον

22Now you are having pain. But I'll see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

22καὶ ὑμεῖς οὖν νῦν μὲν λύπην ἔχετε πάλιν δὲ ὄψομαι ὑμᾶς καὶ χαρήσεται ὑμῶν ἡ καρδία καὶ τὴν χαρὰν ὑμῶν οὐδεὶς αἴρει ἀφ’ ὑμῶν

23On that day, you won't ask me for anything. Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, whatever you ask the Father for in my name, he will give it to you.

23Καὶ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἐρωτήσετε οὐδέν ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἄν τι αἰτήσητε τὸν Πατέρα «δώσει ὑμῖν» «ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου»

24So far you haven't asked for anything in my name. Keep asking and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete."

24ἕως ἄρτι οὐκ ᾐτήσατε οὐδὲν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου αἰτεῖτε καὶ λήμψεσθε ἵνα ἡ χαρὰ ὑμῶν ᾖ πεπληρωμένη

25"I have said these things to you in figurative language. The time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

25Ταῦτα ἐν παροιμίαις λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὐκέτι ἐν παροιμίαις λαλήσω ὑμῖν ἀλλὰ παρρησίᾳ περὶ τοῦ Πατρὸς ἀπαγγελῶ ὑμῖν

26At that time, you will make your requests in my name, so that I will have no need to ask the Father on your behalf,

26ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου αἰτήσεσθε καὶ οὐ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν Πατέρα περὶ ὑμῶν

27because the Father himself loves you, and because you have loved me and believed that I came from God.

27αὐτὸς γὰρ ὁ Πατὴρ φιλεῖ ὑμᾶς ὅτι ὑμεῖς ἐμὲ πεφιλήκατε καὶ πεπιστεύκατε ὅτι ἐγὼ παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐξῆλθον

28I left the Father and came into the world. Now I'm leaving the world and going back to the Father."

28ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τοῦ Πατρὸς καὶ ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον πάλιν ἀφίημι τὸν κόσμον καὶ πορεύομαι πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα

29Jesus' disciples said, "Well, now you're speaking plainly and not using figurative language.

29Λέγουσιν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ Ἴδε νῦν ἐν παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖς καὶ παροιμίαν οὐδεμίαν λέγεις

30Now we know that you know everything and don't need to have anyone ask you any questions. Because of this, we believe that you have come from God."

30νῦν οἴδαμεν ὅτι οἶδας πάντα καὶ οὐ χρείαν ἔχεις ἵνα τίς σε ἐρωτᾷ ἐν τούτῳ πιστεύομεν ὅτι ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἐξῆλθες

31Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?

31Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἄρτι πιστεύετε

32Listen, the time is coming, indeed it has already come, when you will be scattered, each of you to his own home, and you will leave me all by myself. Yet I'm not alone, because the Father is with me.

32ἰδοὺ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ ἐλήλυθεν ἵνα σκορπισθῆτε ἕκαστος εἰς τὰ ἴδια κἀμὲ μόνον ἀφῆτε καὶ οὐκ εἰμὶ μόνος ὅτι ὁ Πατὴρ μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν

33I have told you this so that through me you may have peace. In the world you'll have trouble, but be courageous—I've overcome the world!"

33ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα ἐν ἐμοὶ εἰρήνην ἔχητε ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ θλῖψιν ἔχετε ἀλλὰ θαρσεῖτε ἐγὼ νενίκηκα τὸν κόσμον
