At that time, after a large crowd again had gathered together with nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples and told them, 1About this time another large crowd had gathered, and the people ran out of food again. Jesus called his disciples and told them,
"I have compassion for the crowd, because they've already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. 2 “I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat.
If I send them away to their homes hungry, they'll faint on the road. Some of them have come a long distance."3 If I send them home hungry, they will faint along the way. For some of them have come a long distance.”
His disciples answered him, "Where could anyone get enough bread to feed these people out here in the wilderness?"4His disciples replied, “How are we supposed to find enough food to feed them out here in the wilderness?”
He asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" "Seven," they said.5Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?” “Seven loaves,” they replied.
So he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and gave thanks. He broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples to distribute. So they served them to the crowd. 6So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to his disciples, who distributed the bread to the crowd.
They also had a few small fish. He blessed them and said that the fish should also be distributed. 7A few small fish were found, too, so Jesus also blessed these and told the disciples to distribute them.
The people ate and were filled. Then the disciples picked up the leftover pieces—seven large baskets full. 8They ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food.
Now about 4,000 men were there. Then he sent them on their way. 9There were about 4,000 men in the crowd that day, and Jesus sent them home after they had eaten.
Immediately he got into a boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha. 10Immediately after this, he got into a boat with his disciples and crossed over to the region of Dalmanutha. Pharisees Demand a Miraculous Sign
The Pharisees arrived and began arguing with Jesus. They tested him by demanding from him a sign from heaven. 11When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had arrived, they came and started to argue with him. Testing him, they demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.
He sighed deeply in his spirit and remarked, "Why do those living today demand a sign? I tell all of you with certainty, no sign will be given to this generation." 12When he heard this, he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why do these people keep demanding a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, I will not give this generation any such sign.”
Leaving them, he got into a boat again and crossed to the other side.13So he got back into the boat and left them, and he crossed to the other side of the lake. Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
Now the disciples had forgotten to take any bread along, but they had one loaf with them in the boat. 14But the disciples had forgotten to bring any food. They had only one loaf of bread with them in the boat.
Jesus had been warning them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!" 15As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.”
So they were discussing with one another the fact that they didn't have any bread. 16At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread.
Knowing this, Jesus asked them, "Why are you discussing the fact that you don't have any bread? Don't you understand or perceive yet? Are your hearts hardened? 17Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in?
Do you have eyes, but fail to see? Do you have ears, but fail to hear? Don't you remember? 18 ‘You have eyes—can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all?
When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?" They told him, "Twelve."19 When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?” “Twelve,” they said.
"When I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many large baskets did you fill with the leftover pieces?" They told him, "Seven."20 “And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?” “Seven,” they said.
Then he asked them, "Don't you understand yet?"21 “Don’t you understand yet?” he asked them. Jesus Heals a Blind Man
As they came to Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged him to touch him.22When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus, and they begged him to touch the man and heal him.
Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. He spit into his eyes, placed his hands on him, and asked him, "Do you see anything?"23Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then, spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?”
The man looked up and said, "I see people, but they look like trees walking around." 24The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.”
Then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes again, and he saw clearly. His sight was restored, and he saw everything perfectly, even from a distance.25Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly.
Then Jesus sent him home, saying, "Don't go into the village or tell anyone in the village." 26Jesus sent him away, saying, “Don’t go back into the village on your way home.” Peter’s Declaration about Jesus
Then Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he was asking his disciples, "Who do people say I am?"27Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
They answered him, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets."28“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.”
Then he began to ask them, "But who do you say I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah!"29Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah. ”
Jesus sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.30But Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. Jesus Predicts His Death
Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but after three days he would rise again. 31Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead.
He was speaking about this matter quite openly. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 32As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.
But turning and looking at his disciples, Jesus rebuked Peter, saying, "Get behind me, Satan, because you're not thinking God's thoughts, but human thoughts!"33Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”
Then Jesus called the crowd to himself along with his disciples and told them, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me continuously, 34Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.
because whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it. 35 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.
What profit will a person have if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? 36 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
Indeed, what can a person give in exchange for his life? 37 Is anything worth more than your soul?
If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes with the holy angels in his Father's glory."38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
