| 1At that time, after a large crowd again had gathered together with nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples and told them, | 1In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples and said to them, |
| 2"I have compassion for the crowd, because they've already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. | 2"I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat. |
| 3If I send them away to their homes hungry, they'll faint on the road. Some of them have come a long distance." | 3"If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance." |
| 4His disciples answered him, "Where could anyone get enough bread to feed these people out here in the wilderness?" | 4And His disciples answered Him, "Where will anyone be able to find enough bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?" |
| 5He asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" "Seven," they said. | 5And He was asking them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven." |
| 6So he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and gave thanks. He broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples to distribute. So they served them to the crowd. | 6And He directed the people to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the people. |
| 7They also had a few small fish. He blessed them and said that the fish should also be distributed. | 7They also had a few small fish; and after He had blessed them, He ordered these to be served as well. |
| 8The people ate and were filled. Then the disciples picked up the leftover pieces—seven large baskets full. | 8And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces. |
| 9Now about 4,000 men were there. Then he sent them on their way. | 9About four thousand were there; and He sent them away. |
| 10Immediately he got into a boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha. | 10And immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came to the district of Dalmanutha. |
| 11The Pharisees arrived and began arguing with Jesus. They tested him by demanding from him a sign from heaven. | 11The Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, to test Him. |
| 12He sighed deeply in his spirit and remarked, "Why do those living today demand a sign? I tell all of you with certainty, no sign will be given to this generation." | 12Sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, "Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation." |
| 13Leaving them, he got into a boat again and crossed to the other side. | 13Leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side. |
| 14Now the disciples had forgotten to take any bread along, but they had one loaf with them in the boat. | 14And they had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them. |
| 15Jesus had been warning them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!" | 15And He was giving orders to them, saying, "Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod." |
| 16So they were discussing with one another the fact that they didn't have any bread. | 16They began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread. |
| 17Knowing this, Jesus asked them, "Why are you discussing the fact that you don't have any bread? Don't you understand or perceive yet? Are your hearts hardened? | 17And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet see or understand? Do you have a hardened heart? |
| 18Do you have eyes, but fail to see? Do you have ears, but fail to hear? Don't you remember? | 18"HAVING EYES, DO YOU NOT SEE? AND HAVING EARS, DO YOU NOT HEAR? And do you not remember, |
| 19When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?" They told him, "Twelve." | 19when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?" They said to Him, "Twelve." |
| 20"When I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many large baskets did you fill with the leftover pieces?" They told him, "Seven." | 20"When I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?" And they said to Him, "Seven." |
| 21Then he asked them, "Don't you understand yet?" | 21And He was saying to them, "Do you not yet understand?" |
| 22As they came to Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged him to touch him. | 22And they came to Bethsaida. And they brought a blind man to Jesus and implored Him to touch him. |
| 23Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. He spit into his eyes, placed his hands on him, and asked him, "Do you see anything?" | 23Taking the blind man by the hand, He brought him out of the village; and after spitting on his eyes and laying His hands on him, He asked him, "Do you see anything?" |
| 24The man looked up and said, "I see people, but they look like trees walking around." | 24And he looked up and said, "I see men, for I see them like trees, walking around." |
| 25Then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes again, and he saw clearly. His sight was restored, and he saw everything perfectly, even from a distance. | 25Then again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly. |
| 26Then Jesus sent him home, saying, "Don't go into the village or tell anyone in the village." | 26And He sent him to his home, saying, "Do not even enter the village." |
| 27Then Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he was asking his disciples, "Who do people say I am?" | 27Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, "Who do people say that I am?" |
| 28They answered him, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets." | 28They told Him, saying, "John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets." |
| 29Then he began to ask them, "But who do you say I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah!" | 29And He continued by questioning them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ." |
| 30Jesus sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. | 30And He warned them to tell no one about Him. |
| 31Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but after three days he would rise again. | 31And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. |
| 32He was speaking about this matter quite openly. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. | 32And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. |
| 33But turning and looking at his disciples, Jesus rebuked Peter, saying, "Get behind me, Satan, because you're not thinking God's thoughts, but human thoughts!" | 33But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's." |
| 34Then Jesus called the crowd to himself along with his disciples and told them, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me continuously, | 34And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. |
| 35because whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it. | 35"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. |
| 36What profit will a person have if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? | 36"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? |
| 37Indeed, what can a person give in exchange for his life? | 37"For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? |
| 38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes with the holy angels in his Father's glory." | 38"For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." |
