King James Bible | New Living Translation |
To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of Asaph. I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me. | 1I cry out to God; yes, I shout. Oh, that God would listen to me! |
In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted. | 2When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the Lord. All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven, but my soul was not comforted. |
I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah. | 3I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help. Interlude |
Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak. | 4You don’t let me sleep. I am too distressed even to pray! |
I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times. | 5I think of the good old days, long since ended, |
I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search. | 6when my nights were filled with joyful songs. I search my soul and ponder the difference now. |
Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more? | 7Has the Lord rejected me forever? Will he never again be kind to me? |
Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore? | 8Is his unfailing love gone forever? Have his promises permanently failed? |
Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah. | 9Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he slammed the door on his compassion? Interlude |
And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High. | 10And I said, “This is my fate; the Most High has turned his hand against me.” |
I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. | 11But then I recall all you have done, O LORD; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. |
I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings. | 12They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works. |
Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God? | 13O God, your ways are holy. Is there any god as mighty as you? |
Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people. | 14You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations. |
Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah. | 15By your strong arm, you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. Interlude |
The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled. | 16When the Red Sea saw you, O God, its waters looked and trembled! The sea quaked to its very depths. |
The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad. | 17The clouds poured down rain; the thunder rumbled in the sky. Your arrows of lightning flashed. |
The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook. | 18Your thunder roared from the whirlwind; the lightning lit up the world! The earth trembled and shook. |
Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known. | 19Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was there! |
Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. | 20You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep, with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds. |
