King James Bible | New Living Translation |
Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. | 1I will sing of the LORD’s unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. |
For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens. | 2Your unfailing love will last forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens. |
I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, | 3The LORD said, “I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant. I have sworn this oath to him: |
Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah. | 4‘I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’” Interlude |
And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints. | 5All heaven will praise your great wonders, LORD; myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness. |
For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD? | 6For who in all of heaven can compare with the LORD? What mightiest angel is anything like the LORD? |
God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him. | 7The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne. |
O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee? | 8O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies! Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O LORD? You are entirely faithful. |
Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them. | 9You rule the oceans. You subdue their storm-tossed waves. |
Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm. | 10You crushed the great sea monster. You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. |
The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them. | 11The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours—you created it all. |
The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name. | 12You created north and south. Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon praise your name. |
Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand. | 13Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength. |
Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face. | 14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants. |
Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance. | 15Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, LORD. |
In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted. | 16They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation. They exult in your righteousness. |
For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted. | 17You are their glorious strength. It pleases you to make us strong. |
For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king. | 18Yes, our protection comes from the LORD, and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king. |
Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. | 19Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful people. You said, “I have raised up a warrior. I have selected him from the common people to be king. |
I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: | 20I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil. |
With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him. | 21I will steady him with my hand; with my powerful arm I will make him strong. |
The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him. | 22His enemies will not defeat him, nor will the wicked overpower him. |
And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him. | 23I will beat down his adversaries before him and destroy those who hate him. |
But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted. | 24My faithfulness and unfailing love will be with him, and by my authority he will grow in power. |
I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers. | 25I will extend his rule over the sea, his dominion over the rivers. |
He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. | 26And he will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’ |
Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. | 27I will make him my firstborn son, the mightiest king on earth. |
My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. | 28I will love him and be kind to him forever; my covenant with him will never end. |
His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. | 29I will preserve an heir for him; his throne will be as endless as the days of heaven. |
If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; | 30But if his descendants forsake my instructions and fail to obey my regulations, |
If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; | 31if they do not obey my decrees and fail to keep my commands, |
Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. | 32then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their disobedience with beating. |
Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. | 33But I will never stop loving him nor fail to keep my promise to him. |
My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. | 34No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said. |
Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. | 35I have sworn an oath to David, and in my holiness I cannot lie: |
His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. | 36His dynasty will go on forever; his kingdom will endure as the sun. |
It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah. | 37It will be as eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!” Interlude |
But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed. | 38But now you have rejected him and cast him off. You are angry with your anointed king. |
Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. | 39You have renounced your covenant with him; you have thrown his crown in the dust. |
Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin. | 40You have broken down the walls protecting him and ruined every fort defending him. |
All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours. | 41Everyone who comes along has robbed him, and he has become a joke to his neighbors. |
Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice. | 42You have strengthened his enemies and made them all rejoice. |
Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle. | 43You have made his sword useless and refused to help him in battle. |
Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground. | 44You have ended his splendor and overturned his throne. |
The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah. | 45You have made him old before his time and publicly disgraced him. Interlude |
How long, LORD? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire? | 46O LORD, how long will this go on? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your anger burn like fire? |
Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain? | 47Remember how short my life is, how empty and futile this human existence! |
What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah. | 48No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave. Interlude |
Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth? | 49Lord, where is your unfailing love? You promised it to David with a faithful pledge. |
Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people; | 50Consider, Lord, how your servants are disgraced! I carry in my heart the insults of so many people. |
Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O LORD; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed. | 51Your enemies have mocked me, O LORD; they mock your anointed king wherever he goes. |
Blessed be the LORD for evermore. Amen, and Amen. | 52Praise the LORD forever! Amen and amen! |
