For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is going to remove from Jerusalem and Judah Both supply and support, the whole supply of bread And the whole supply of water;1For behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts is about to remove from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: the whole supply of food and water,
The mighty man and the warrior, The judge and the prophet, The diviner and the elder,2the mighty man and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the soothsayer and the elder,
The captain of fifty and the honorable man, The counselor and the expert artisan, And the skillful enchanter.3the commander of fifty and the dignitary, the counselor, the cunning magician, and the clever enchanter.
And I will make mere lads their princes, And capricious children will rule over them,4“I will make mere lads their leaders, and children will rule over them.”
And the people will be oppressed, Each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; The youth will storm against the elder And the inferior against the honorable.5The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor; the young will rise up against the old, and the base against the honorable.
When a man lays hold of his brother in his father's house, saying, "You have a cloak, you shall be our ruler, And these ruins will be under your charge,"6A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You have a cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this heap of rubble.”
He will protest on that day, saying, "I will not be your healer, For in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; You should not appoint me ruler of the people."7On that day he will cry aloud: “I am not a healer. I have no food or clothing in my house. Do not make me leader of the people!”
For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, Because their speech and their actions are against the LORD, To rebel against His glorious presence.8For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they spoke and acted against the LORD, defying His glorious presence.
The expression of their faces bears witness against them, And they display their sin like Sodom; They do not even conceal it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves.9The expression on their faces testifies against them, and like Sodom they flaunt their sin; they do not conceal it. Woe to them, for they have brought disaster upon themselves.
Say to the righteous that it will go well with them, For they will eat the fruit of their actions.10Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their labor.
Woe to the wicked! It will go badly with him, For what he deserves will be done to him.11Woe to the wicked; disaster is upon them! For they will be repaid with what their hands have done.
O My people! Their oppressors are children, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who guide you lead you astray And confuse the direction of your paths.12Youths oppress My people, and women rule over them. O My people, your guides mislead you; they turn you from your paths.
The LORD arises to contend, And stands to judge the people.13The LORD arises to contend; He stands to judge the people.
The LORD enters into judgment with the elders and princes of His people, "It is you who have devoured the vineyard; The plunder of the poor is in your houses.14The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of His people: “You have devoured the vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your houses.
"What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the face of the poor?" Declares the Lord GOD of hosts.15Why do you crush My people and grind the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.
Moreover, the LORD said, "Because the daughters of Zion are proud And walk with heads held high and seductive eyes, And go along with mincing steps And tinkle the bangles on their feet,16The LORD also says: “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty—walking with heads held high and wanton eyes, prancing and skipping as they go, jingling the bracelets on their ankles—
Therefore the Lord will afflict the scalp of the daughters of Zion with scabs, And the LORD will make their foreheads bare."17the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will make their foreheads bare.”
In that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, headbands, crescent ornaments,18In that day the Lord will take away their finery: their anklets and headbands and crescents;
dangling earrings, bracelets, veils,19their pendants, bracelets, and veils;
headdresses, ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, amulets,20their headdresses, ankle chains, and sashes; their perfume bottles and charms;
finger rings, nose rings,21their signet rings and nose rings;
festal robes, outer tunics, cloaks, money purses,22their festive robes, capes, cloaks, and purses;
hand mirrors, undergarments, turbans and veils.23and their mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and shawls.
Now it will come about that instead of sweet perfume there will be putrefaction; Instead of a belt, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, a plucked-out scalp; Instead of fine clothes, a donning of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty.24Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame.
Your men will fall by the sword And your mighty ones in battle.25Your men will fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle.
And her gates will lament and mourn, And deserted she will sit on the ground.26And the gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
