Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac; | 5Everything he owned Abraham left to his son Isaac. |
but to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east. | 6But while he was still alive, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them off to the east, away from his son Isaac. |
These are all the years of Abraham's life that he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years. | 7Abraham lived a total of 175 years. |
Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people. | 8Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man who had lived a full life. He joined his ancestors. |
Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre, | 9His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar, the Hethite. |

It came about after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived by Beer-lahai-roi. | 11After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac lived near Beer Lahai Roi. |
Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maid, bore to Abraham; | 12This is the account of Abraham's son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's servant, bore to Abraham. |

They settled from Havilah to Shur which is east of Egypt as one goes toward Assyria; he settled in defiance of all his relatives. | 18His descendants settled from Havilah to Shur, which runs next to Egypt all the way to Asshur. They settled away from all their relatives. |
Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham became the father of Isaac; | 19This is the account of Isaac, the son of Abraham. Abraham became the father of Isaac. |
and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. | 20When Isaac was forty years old, he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean. |
Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived. | 21Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife because she was childless. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. |
But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is so, why then am I this way?" So she went to inquire of the LORD. | 22But the children struggled inside her, and she said, "If it is going to be like this, I'm not so sure I want to be pregnant!" So she asked the LORD, |
The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger." | 23and the LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will be separated from within you. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger." |
When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. | 24When the time came for Rebekah to give birth, there were twins in her womb. |
Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. | 25The first came out reddish all over, like a hairy garment, so they named him Esau. |
Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them. | 26When his brother came out with his hand clutching Esau's heel, they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born. |
When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents. | 27When the boys grew up, Esau became a skilled hunter, a man of the open fields, but Jacob was an even-tempered man, living in tents. |
Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. | 28Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for fresh game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. |
When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished; | 29Now Jacob cooked some stew, and when Esau came in from the open fields, he was famished. |
and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom. | 30So Esau said to Jacob, "Feed me some of the red stuff--yes, this red stuff--because I'm starving!" (That is why he was also called Edom.) |
But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright." | 31But Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright." |
Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?" | 32"Look," said Esau, "I'm about to die! What use is the birthright to me?" |
And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. | 33But Jacob said, "Swear an oath to me now." So Esau swore an oath to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. |
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. | 34Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew; Esau ate and drank, then got up and went out. So Esau despised his birthright. |
