The LORD spoke again to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,1The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
"Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'These are the creatures which you may eat from all the animals that are on the earth.2"Say to the Israelites: 'Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat:
Whatever divides a hoof, thus making split hoofs, and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat.3You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.
'Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these, among those which chew the cud, or among those which divide the hoof: the camel, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you.4"'There are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you.
'Likewise, the shaphan, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you;5The hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
the rabbit also, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you;6The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
and the pig, for though it divides the hoof, thus making a split hoof, it does not chew cud, it is unclean to you.7And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
'You shall not eat of their flesh nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.8You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
'These you may eat, whatever is in the water: all that have fins and scales, those in the water, in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat.9"'Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams you may eat any that have fins and scales.
'But whatever is in the seas and in the rivers that does not have fins and scales among all the teeming life of the water, and among all the living creatures that are in the water, they are detestable things to you,10But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales--whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water--you are to regard as unclean.
and they shall be abhorrent to you; you may not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses you shall detest.11And since you are to regard them as unclean, you must not eat their meat; you must regard their carcasses as unclean.
'Whatever in the water does not have fins and scales is abhorrent to you.12Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be regarded as unclean by you.
'These, moreover, you shall detest among the birds; they are abhorrent, not to be eaten: the eagle and the vulture and the buzzard,13"'These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture,
and the kite and the falcon in its kind,14the red kite, any kind of black kite,
every raven in its kind,15any kind of raven,
and the ostrich and the owl and the sea gull and the hawk in its kind,16the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,
and the little owl and the cormorant and the great owl,17the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,
and the white owl and the pelican and the carrion vulture,18the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,
and the stork, the heron in its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat.19the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.
All the winged insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.20"'All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be regarded as unclean by you.
Yet these you may eat among all the winged insects which walk on all fours: those which have above their feet jointed legs with which to jump on the earth.21There are, however, some flying insects that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground.
'These of them you may eat: the locust in its kinds, and the devastating locust in its kinds, and the cricket in its kinds, and the grasshopper in its kinds.22Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper.
'But all other winged insects which are four-footed are detestable to you.23But all other flying insects that have four legs you are to regard as unclean.
'By these, moreover, you will be made unclean: whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,24"'You will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.
and whoever picks up any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.25Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.
Concerning all the animals which divide the hoof but do not make a split hoof, or which do not chew cud, they are unclean to you: whoever touches them becomes unclean.26"'Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean.
Also whatever walks on its paws, among all the creatures that walk on all fours, are unclean to you; whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,27Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.
and the one who picks up their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; they are unclean to you.28Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. These animals are unclean for you.
'Now these are to you the unclean among the swarming things which swarm on the earth: the mole, and the mouse, and the great lizard in its kinds,29"'Of the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard,
and the gecko, and the crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand reptile, and the chameleon.30the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon.
'These are to you the unclean among all the swarming things; whoever touches them when they are dead becomes unclean until evening.31Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening.
'Also anything on which one of them may fall when they are dead becomes unclean, including any wooden article, or clothing, or a skin, or a sack-- any article of which use is made-- it shall be put in the water and be unclean until evening, then it becomes clean.32When one of them dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth. Put it in water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean.
'As for any earthenware vessel into which one of them may fall, whatever is in it becomes unclean and you shall break the vessel.33If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot.
'Any of the food which may be eaten, on which water comes, shall become unclean, and any liquid which may be drunk in every vessel shall become unclean.34Any food you are allowed to eat that has come into contact with water from any such pot is unclean, and any liquid that is drunk from such a pot is unclean.
'Everything, moreover, on which part of their carcass may fall becomes unclean; an oven or a stove shall be smashed; they are unclean and shall continue as unclean to you.35Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean.
'Nevertheless a spring or a cistern collecting water shall be clean, though the one who touches their carcass shall be unclean.36A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean.
'If a part of their carcass falls on any seed for sowing which is to be sown, it is clean.37If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean.
'Though if water is put on the seed and a part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.38But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.
'Also if one of the animals dies which you have for food, the one who touches its carcass becomes unclean until evening.39"'If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean till evening.
'He too, who eats some of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening, and the one who picks up its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.40Anyone who eats some of its carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.
'Now every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable, not to be eaten.41"'Every creature that moves along the ground is to be regarded as unclean; it is not to be eaten.
Whatever crawls on its belly, and whatever walks on all fours, whatever has many feet, in respect to every swarming thing that swarms on the earth, you shall not eat them, for they are detestable.42You are not to eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is unclean.
'Do not render yourselves detestable through any of the swarming things that swarm; and you shall not make yourselves unclean with them so that you become unclean.43Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them.
'For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth.44I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground.
'For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.'"45I am the LORD, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.
This is the law regarding the animal and the bird, and every living thing that moves in the waters and everything that swarms on the earth,46"'These are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves about in the water and every creature that moves along the ground.
to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the edible creature and the creature which is not to be eaten.47You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.'"
