| 1"So it shall be when all of these things have come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind in all nations where the LORD your God has banished you, | 1“In the future, when you experience all these blessings and curses I have listed for you, and when you are living among the nations to which the LORD your God has exiled you, take to heart all these instructions. |
| 2and you return to the LORD your God and obey Him with all your heart and soul according to all that I command you today, you and your sons, | 2If at that time you and your children return to the LORD your God, and if you obey with all your heart and all your soul all the commands I have given you today, |
| 3then the LORD your God will restore you from captivity, and have compassion on you, and will gather you again from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you. | 3then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes. He will have mercy on you and gather you back from all the nations where he has scattered you. |
| 4"If your outcasts are at the ends of the earth, from there the LORD your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you back. | 4Even though you are banished to the ends of the earth, the LORD your God will gather you from there and bring you back again. |
| 5"The LORD your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers. | 5The LORD your God will return you to the land that belonged to your ancestors, and you will possess that land again. Then he will make you even more prosperous and numerous than your ancestors! |
| 6"Moreover the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live. | 6“The LORD your God will change your heart and the hearts of all your descendants, so that you will love him with all your heart and soul and so you may live! |
| 7"The LORD your God will inflict all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. | 7The LORD your God will inflict all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate and persecute you. |
| 8"And you shall again obey the LORD, and observe all His commandments which I command you today. | 8Then you will again obey the LORD and keep all his commands that I am giving you today. |
| 9"Then the LORD your God will prosper you abundantly in all the work of your hand, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your cattle and in the produce of your ground, for the LORD will again rejoice over you for good, just as He rejoiced over your fathers; | 9“The LORD your God will then make you successful in everything you do. He will give you many children and numerous livestock, and he will cause your fields to produce abundant harvests, for the LORD will again delight in being good to you as he was to your ancestors. |
| 10if you obey the LORD your God to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the law, if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and soul. | 10The LORD your God will delight in you if you obey his voice and keep the commands and decrees written in this Book of Instruction, and if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and soul. The Choice of Life or Death |
| 11"For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach. | 11“This command I am giving you today is not too difficult for you, and it is not beyond your reach. |
| 12"It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?' | 12It is not kept in heaven, so distant that you must ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven and bring it down so we can hear it and obey?’ |
| 13"Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?' | 13It is not kept beyond the sea, so far away that you must ask, ‘Who will cross the sea to bring it to us so we can hear it and obey?’ |
| 14"But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it. | 14No, the message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it. |
| 15"See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity; | 15“Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. |
| 16in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the LORD your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it. | 16For I command you this day to love the LORD your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy. |
| 17"But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them, | 17“But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods, |
| 18I declare to you today that you shall surely perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess it. | 18then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long, good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy. |
| 19"I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, | 19“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! |
| 20by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them." | 20You can make this choice by loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the LORD, you will live long in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” |
