Psalm 22
New American Standard Bible 1995New Living Translation
For the choir director; upon Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning.1My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help?
O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest.2Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.
Yet You are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.3Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers trusted; They trusted and You delivered them.4Our ancestors trusted in you, and you rescued them.
To You they cried out and were delivered; In You they trusted and were not disappointed.5They cried out to you and were saved. They trusted in you and were never disgraced.
But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people.6But I am a worm and not a man. I am scorned and despised by all!
All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying,7Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying,
"Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him."8“Is this the one who relies on the LORD? Then let the LORD save him! If the LORD loves him so much, let the LORD rescue him!”
Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb; You made me trust when upon my mother's breasts.9Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast.
Upon You I was cast from birth; You have been my God from my mother's womb.10I was thrust into your arms at my birth. You have been my God from the moment I was born.
Be not far from me, for trouble is near; For there is none to help.11Do not stay so far from me, for trouble is near, and no one else can help me.
Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.12My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls; fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in!
They open wide their mouth at me, As a ravening and a roaring lion.13Like lions they open their jaws against me, roaring and tearing into their prey.
I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me.14My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death.15My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead.
For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet.16My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet.
I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me;17I can count all my bones. My enemies stare at me and gloat.
They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.18They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing.
But You, O LORD, be not far off; O You my help, hasten to my assistance.19O LORD, do not stay far away! You are my strength; come quickly to my aid!
Deliver my soul from the sword, My only life from the power of the dog.20Save me from the sword; spare my precious life from these dogs.
Save me from the lion's mouth; From the horns of the wild oxen You answer me.21Snatch me from the lion’s jaws and from the horns of these wild oxen.
I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.22I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.
You who fear the LORD, praise Him; All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel.23Praise the LORD, all you who fear him! Honor him, all you descendants of Jacob! Show him reverence, all you descendants of Israel!
For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard.24For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy. He has not turned his back on them, but has listened to their cries for help.
From You comes my praise in the great assembly; I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him.25I will praise you in the great assembly. I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who worship you.
The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever!26The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the LORD will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy.
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations will worship before You.27The whole earth will acknowledge the LORD and return to him. All the families of the nations will bow down before him.
For the kingdom is the LORD'S And He rules over the nations.28For royal power belongs to the LORD. He rules all the nations.
All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship, All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep his soul alive.29Let the rich of the earth feast and worship. Bow before him, all who are mortal, all whose lives will end as dust.
Posterity will serve Him; It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation.30Our children will also serve him. Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord.
They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it.31His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born. They will hear about everything he has done.
