New American Standard Bible 1995 | New Living Translation |
A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the lovingkindness of the LORD forever; To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth. | 1I will sing of the LORD’s unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. |
For I have said, "Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness." | 2Your unfailing love will last forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens. |
"I have made a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to David My servant, | 3The LORD said, “I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant. I have sworn this oath to him: |
I will establish your seed forever And build up your throne to all generations." Selah. | 4‘I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’” Interlude |
The heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. | 5All heaven will praise your great wonders, LORD; myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness. |
For who in the skies is comparable to the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the LORD, | 6For who in all of heaven can compare with the LORD? What mightiest angel is anything like the LORD? |
A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, And awesome above all those who are around Him? | 7The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne. |
O LORD God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. | 8O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies! Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O LORD? You are entirely faithful. |
You rule the swelling of the sea; When its waves rise, You still them. | 9You rule the oceans. You subdue their storm-tossed waves. |
You Yourself crushed Rahab like one who is slain; You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm. | 10You crushed the great sea monster. You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. |
The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all it contains, You have founded them. | 11The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours—you created it all. |
The north and the south, You have created them; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at Your name. | 12You created north and south. Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon praise your name. |
You have a strong arm; Your hand is mighty, Your right hand is exalted. | 13Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength. |
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Lovingkindness and truth go before You. | 14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants. |
How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! O LORD, they walk in the light of Your countenance. | 15Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, LORD. |
In Your name they rejoice all the day, And by Your righteousness they are exalted. | 16They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation. They exult in your righteousness. |
For You are the glory of their strength, And by Your favor our horn is exalted. | 17You are their glorious strength. It pleases you to make us strong. |
For our shield belongs to the LORD, And our king to the Holy One of Israel. | 18Yes, our protection comes from the LORD, and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king. |
Once You spoke in vision to Your godly ones, And said, "I have given help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. | 19Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful people. You said, “I have raised up a warrior. I have selected him from the common people to be king. |
"I have found David My servant; With My holy oil I have anointed him, | 20I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil. |
With whom My hand will be established; My arm also will strengthen him. | 21I will steady him with my hand; with my powerful arm I will make him strong. |
"The enemy will not deceive him, Nor the son of wickedness afflict him. | 22His enemies will not defeat him, nor will the wicked overpower him. |
"But I shall crush his adversaries before him, And strike those who hate him. | 23I will beat down his adversaries before him and destroy those who hate him. |
"My faithfulness and My lovingkindness will be with him, And in My name his horn will be exalted. | 24My faithfulness and unfailing love will be with him, and by my authority he will grow in power. |
"I shall also set his hand on the sea And his right hand on the rivers. | 25I will extend his rule over the sea, his dominion over the rivers. |
"He will cry to Me, 'You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.' | 26And he will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’ |
"I also shall make him My firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth. | 27I will make him my firstborn son, the mightiest king on earth. |
"My lovingkindness I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall be confirmed to him. | 28I will love him and be kind to him forever; my covenant with him will never end. |
"So I will establish his descendants forever And his throne as the days of heaven. | 29I will preserve an heir for him; his throne will be as endless as the days of heaven. |
"If his sons forsake My law And do not walk in My judgments, | 30But if his descendants forsake my instructions and fail to obey my regulations, |
If they violate My statutes And do not keep My commandments, | 31if they do not obey my decrees and fail to keep my commands, |
Then I will punish their transgression with the rod And their iniquity with stripes. | 32then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their disobedience with beating. |
"But I will not break off My lovingkindness from him, Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness. | 33But I will never stop loving him nor fail to keep my promise to him. |
"My covenant I will not violate, Nor will I alter the utterance of My lips. | 34No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said. |
"Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David. | 35I have sworn an oath to David, and in my holiness I cannot lie: |
"His descendants shall endure forever And his throne as the sun before Me. | 36His dynasty will go on forever; his kingdom will endure as the sun. |
"It shall be established forever like the moon, And the witness in the sky is faithful." Selah. | 37It will be as eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!” Interlude |
But You have cast off and rejected, You have been full of wrath against Your anointed. | 38But now you have rejected him and cast him off. You are angry with your anointed king. |
You have spurned the covenant of Your servant; You have profaned his crown in the dust. | 39You have renounced your covenant with him; you have thrown his crown in the dust. |
You have broken down all his walls; You have brought his strongholds to ruin. | 40You have broken down the walls protecting him and ruined every fort defending him. |
All who pass along the way plunder him; He has become a reproach to his neighbors. | 41Everyone who comes along has robbed him, and he has become a joke to his neighbors. |
You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice. | 42You have strengthened his enemies and made them all rejoice. |
You also turn back the edge of his sword And have not made him stand in battle. | 43You have made his sword useless and refused to help him in battle. |
You have made his splendor to cease And cast his throne to the ground. | 44You have ended his splendor and overturned his throne. |
You have shortened the days of his youth; You have covered him with shame. Selah. | 45You have made him old before his time and publicly disgraced him. Interlude |
How long, O LORD? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath burn like fire? | 46O LORD, how long will this go on? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your anger burn like fire? |
Remember what my span of life is; For what vanity You have created all the sons of men! | 47Remember how short my life is, how empty and futile this human existence! |
What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah. | 48No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave. Interlude |
Where are Your former lovingkindnesses, O Lord, Which You swore to David in Your faithfulness? | 49Lord, where is your unfailing love? You promised it to David with a faithful pledge. |
Remember, O Lord, the reproach of Your servants; How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples, | 50Consider, Lord, how your servants are disgraced! I carry in my heart the insults of so many people. |
With which Your enemies have reproached, O LORD, With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed. | 51Your enemies have mocked me, O LORD; they mock your anointed king wherever he goes. |
Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and Amen. | 52Praise the LORD forever! Amen and amen! |
