NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
(Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet dry with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)2It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.
So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, "Lord, look, the one you love is sick."3So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.”
When Jesus heard this, he said, "This sickness will not lead to death, but to God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."4But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
(Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.) 5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he remained in the place where he was for two more days.6So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
Then after this, he said to his disciples, "Let us go to Judea again."7Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”
The disciples replied, "Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just now trying to stone you to death! Are you going there again?"8The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?”
Jesus replied, "Are there not twelve hours in a day? If anyone walks around in the daytime, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
But if anyone walks around at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him." 10But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
After he said this, he added, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep. But I am going there to awaken him."11After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.”
Then the disciples replied, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."12The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
(Now Jesus had been talking about his death, but they thought he had been talking about real sleep.) 13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep.
Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died,14Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died,
and I am glad for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."15and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
So Thomas (called Didymus) said to his fellow disciples, "Let us go too, so that we may die with him." 16So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb four days already.17Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.
(Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,18Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off,
so many of the Jewish people of the region had come to Martha and Mary to console them over the loss of their brother.)19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.
So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary was sitting in the house.20So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will grant you." 22But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”
Jesus replied, "Your brother will come back to life again."23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Martha said, "I know that he will come back to life again in the resurrection at the last day."24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies,25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
and the one who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
She replied, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God who comes into the world." 27She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
And when she had said this, Martha went and called her sister Mary, saying privately, "The Teacher is here and is asking for you."28When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”
So when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.29And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.
(Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still in the place where Martha had come out to meet him.)30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.
Then the people who were with Mary in the house consoling her saw her get up quickly and go out. They followed her, because they thought she was going to the tomb to weep there. 31When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Now when Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."32Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the people who had come with her weeping, he was intensely moved in spirit and greatly distressed.33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.
He asked, "Where have you laid him?" They replied, "Lord, come and see."34And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”
Jesus wept.35Jesus wept.
Thus the people who had come to mourn said, "Look how much he loved him!"36So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
But some of them said, "This is the man who caused the blind man to see! Couldn't he have done something to keep Lazarus from dying?" 37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”
Jesus, intensely moved again, came to the tomb. (Now it was a cave, and a stone was placed across it.)38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, replied, "Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, because he has been buried four days."39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.”
Jesus responded, "Didn't I tell you that if you believe, you would see the glory of God?"40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”
So they took away the stone. Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you that you have listened to me.41So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
I knew that you always listen to me, but I said this for the sake of the crowd standing around here, that they may believe that you sent me."42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.”
When he had said this, he shouted in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.”
The one who had died came out, his feet and hands tied up with strips of cloth, and a cloth wrapped around his face. Jesus said to them, "Unwrap him and let him go." 44The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Then many of the people, who had come with Mary and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in him.45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him,
But some of them went to the Pharisees and reported to them what Jesus had done.46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
So the chief priests and the Pharisees called the council together and said, "What are we doing? For this man is performing many miraculous signs.47So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs.
If we allow him to go on in this way, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away our sanctuary and our nation." 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said, "You know nothing at all!49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all.
You do not realize that it is more to your advantage to have one man die for the people than for the whole nation to perish."50Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”
(Now he did not say this on his own, but because he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the Jewish nation,51He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
and not for the Jewish nation only, but to gather together into one the children of God who are scattered.)52and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
So from that day they planned together to kill him. 53So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.
Thus Jesus no longer went around publicly among the Judeans, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.54Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.
Now the Jewish feast of Passover was near, and many people went up to Jerusalem from the rural areas before the Passover to cleanse themselves ritually.55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.
Thus they were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple courts, "What do you think? That he won't come to the feast?"56They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?”
(Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesus was should report it, so that they could arrest him.) 57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
