I have placed my spirit on him; he will make just decrees for the nations. | 1This is My Servant; I strengthen Him, this is My Chosen One; I delight in Him. I have put My Spirit on Him; He will bring justice to the nations. |
He will not cry out or shout; he will not publicize himself in the streets. | 2He will not cry out or shout or make His voice heard in the streets. |
A crushed reed he will not break, a dim wick he will not extinguish; he will faithfully make just decrees. | 3He will not break a bruised reed, and He will not put out a smoldering wick; He will faithfully bring justice. |
He will not grow dim or be crushed before establishing justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait in anticipation for his decrees." | 4He will not grow weak or be discouraged until He has established justice on earth. The islands will wait for His instruction." |
This is what the true God, the LORD, says--the one who created the sky and stretched it out, the one who fashioned the earth and everything that lives on it, the one who gives breath to the people on it, and life to those who live on it: | 5This is what God, Yahweh, says-- who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and life to those who walk on it--" |
"I, the LORD, officially commission you; I take hold of your hand. I protect you and make you a covenant mediator for people, and a light to the nations, | 6I, Yahweh, have called You for a righteous purpose, and I will hold You by Your hand. I will keep You and appoint You to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations, |
to open blind eyes, to release prisoners from dungeons, those who live in darkness from prisons. | 7in order to open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the dungeon, and those sitting in darkness from the prison house. |
I am the LORD! That is my name! I will not share my glory with anyone else, or the praise due me with idols. | 8I am Yahweh, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another or My praise to idols. |
Look, my earlier predictive oracles have come to pass; now I announce new events. Before they begin to occur, I reveal them to you." | 9The past events have indeed happened. Now I declare new events; I announce them to you before they occur." |
Sing to the LORD a brand new song! Praise him from the horizon of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and everything that lives in it, you coastlands and those who live there! | 10Sing a new song to the LORD; sing His praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea with all that fills it, you islands with your inhabitants. |
Let the desert and its cities shout out, the towns where the nomads of Kedar live! Let the residents of Sela shout joyfully; let them shout loudly from the mountaintops. | 11Let the desert and its cities shout, the settlements where Kedar dwells cry aloud. Let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy; let them cry out from the mountaintops. |
Let them give the LORD the honor he deserves; let them praise his deeds in the coastlands. | 12Let them give glory to the LORD and declare His praise in the islands. |
The LORD emerges like a hero, like a warrior he inspires himself for battle; he shouts, yes, he yells, he shows his enemies his power. | 13The LORD advances like a warrior; He stirs up His zeal like a soldier. He shouts, He roars aloud, He prevails over His enemies." |
"I have been inactive for a long time; I kept quiet and held back. Like a woman in labor I groan; I pant and gasp. | 14I have kept silent from ages past; I have been quiet and restrained Myself. But now, I will groan like a woman in labor, gasping breathlessly. |
I will make the trees on the mountains and hills wither up; I will dry up all their vegetation. I will turn streams into islands, and dry up pools of water. | 15I will lay waste mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation. I will turn rivers into islands and dry up marshes. |
I will lead the blind along an unfamiliar way; I will guide them down paths they have never traveled. I will turn the darkness in front of them into light, and level out the rough ground. This is what I will do for them. I will not abandon them. | 16I will lead the blind by a way they did not know; I will guide them on paths they have not known. I will turn darkness to light in front of them and rough places into level ground. This is what I will do for them, and I will not forsake them. |
Those who trust in idols will turn back and be utterly humiliated, those who say to metal images, 'You are our gods.'" | 17They will be turned back and utterly ashamed-- those who trust in idols and say to metal-plated images: You are our gods!" |
"Listen, you deaf ones! Take notice, you blind ones! | 18Listen, you deaf! Look, you blind, so that you may see. |
My servant is truly blind, my messenger is truly deaf. My covenant partner, the servant of the LORD, is truly blind. | 19Who is blind but My servant, or deaf like My messenger I am sending? Who is blind like My dedicated one, or blind like the servant of the LORD? |
You see many things, but don't comprehend; their ears are open, but do not hear." | 20Though seeing many things, you do not obey. Though his ears are open, he does not listen." |
The LORD wanted to exhibit his justice by magnifying his law and displaying it. | 21The LORD was pleased, because of His righteousness, to magnify His instruction and make it glorious. |
But these people are looted and plundered; all of them are trapped in pits and held captive in prisons. They were carried away as loot with no one to rescue them; they were carried away as plunder, and no one says, "Bring that back!" | 22But this is a people plundered and looted, all of them trapped in holes or imprisoned in dungeons. They have become plunder with no one to rescue them and loot, with no one saying, "Give it back!" |
Who among you will pay attention to this? Who will listen attentively in the future? | 23Who among you will pay attention to this? Let him listen and obey in the future. |
Who handed Jacob over to the robber? Who handed Israel over to the looters? Was it not the LORD, against whom we sinned? They refused to follow his commands; they disobeyed his law. | 24Who gave Jacob to the robber, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the LORD? Have we not sinned against Him? They were not willing to walk in His ways, and they would not listen to His instruction. |
So he poured out his fierce anger on them, along with the devastation of war. Its flames encircled them, but they did not realize it; it burned against them, but they did notice. | 25So He poured out on Jacob His furious anger and the power of war. It surrounded him with fire, but he did not know it; it burned him, but he paid no attention. |
