NET BibleNew International Version
For the music director, a psalm of David. O God whom I praise, do not ignore me! 1For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. My God, whom I praise, do not remain silent,
For they say cruel and deceptive things to me; they lie to me. 2for people who are wicked and deceitful have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues.
They surround me and say hateful things; they attack me for no reason. 3With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause.
They repay my love with accusations, but I continue to pray. 4In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.
They repay me evil for good, and hate for love. 5They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship.
Appoint an evil man to testify against him! May an accuser stand at his right side! 6Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy; let an accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, he will be found guilty! Then his prayer will be regarded as sinful. 7When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him.
May his days be few! May another take his job! 8May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.
May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow! 9May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
May his children roam around begging, asking for handouts as they leave their ruined home! 10May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes.
May the creditor seize all he owns! May strangers loot his property! 11May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.
May no one show him kindness! May no one have compassion on his fatherless children! 12May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children.
May his descendants be cut off! May the memory of them be wiped out by the time the next generation arrives! 13May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation.
May his ancestors' sins be remembered by the LORD! May his mother's sin not be forgotten! 14May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
May the LORD be constantly aware of them, and cut off the memory of his children from the earth! 15May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth.
For he never bothered to show kindness; he harassed the oppressed and needy, and killed the disheartened. 16For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted.
He loved to curse others, so those curses have come upon him. He had no desire to bless anyone, so he has experienced no blessings. 17He loved to pronounce a curse-- may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing-- may it be far from him.
He made cursing a way of life, so curses poured into his stomach like water and seeped into his bones like oil. 18He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil.
May a curse attach itself to him, like a garment one puts on, or a belt one wears continually! 19May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him.
May the LORD repay my accusers in this way, those who say evil things about me! 20May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me.
O sovereign LORD, intervene on my behalf for the sake of your reputation! Because your loyal love is good, deliver me! 21But you, Sovereign LORD, help me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.
For I am oppressed and needy, and my heart beats violently within me. 22For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
I am fading away like a shadow at the end of the day; I am shaken off like a locust. 23I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.
I am so starved my knees shake; I have turned into skin and bones. 24My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt.
I am disdained by them. When they see me, they shake their heads. 25I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads.
Help me, O LORD my God! Because you are faithful to me, deliver me! 26Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your unfailing love.
Then they will realize this is your work, and that you, LORD, have accomplished it. 27Let them know that it is your hand, that you, LORD, have done it.
They curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, but your servant will rejoice. 28While they curse, may you bless; may those who attack me be put to shame, but may your servant rejoice.
My accusers will be covered with shame, and draped in humiliation as if it were a robe. 29May my accusers be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak.
I will thank the LORD profusely, in the middle of a crowd I will praise him, 30With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him.
because he stands at the right hand of the needy, to deliver him from those who threaten his life. 31For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.
