Job 31

New International VersionBerean Study Bible
"I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.1“I have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I gaze with desire at a virgin?
For what is our lot from God above, our heritage from the Almighty on high?2For what is the allotment of God from above, or the heritage from the Almighty on high?
Is it not ruin for the wicked, disaster for those who do wrong?3Does not disaster come to the unjust and calamity to the workers of iniquity?
Does he not see my ways and count my every step?4Does He not see my ways and count my every step?
"If I have walked with falsehood or my foot has hurried after deceit--5If I have walked in falsehood or my foot has rushed to deceit,
let God weigh me in honest scales and he will know that I am blameless--6let God weigh me with honest scales, that He may know my integrity.
if my steps have turned from the path, if my heart has been led by my eyes, or if my hands have been defiled,7If my steps have turned from the path, if my heart has followed my eyes, or if impurity has stuck to my hands,
then may others eat what I have sown, and may my crops be uprooted.8then may another eat what I have sown, and may my crops be uprooted.
"If my heart has been enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbor's door,9If my heart has been enticed by my neighbor’s wife, or I have lurked at his door,
then may my wife grind another man's grain, and may other men sleep with her.10then may my own wife grind grain for another, and may other men sleep with her.
For that would have been wicked, a sin to be judged.11For that would be a heinous crime, an iniquity to be judged.
It is a fire that burns to Destruction; it would have uprooted my harvest.12For it is a fire that burns down to Abaddon; it would root out my entire harvest.
"If I have denied justice to any of my servants, whether male or female, when they had a grievance against me,13If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or maidservant when they made a complaint against me,
what will I do when God confronts me? What will I answer when called to account?14what will I do when God rises to judge? How will I answer when called to account?
Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?15Did not He who made me in the womb also make them? Did not the same One form us in the womb?
"If I have denied the desires of the poor or let the eyes of the widow grow weary,16If I have denied the desires of the poor or allowed the widow’s eyes to fail,
if I have kept my bread to myself, not sharing it with the fatherless--17if I have eaten my morsel alone, not sharing it with the fatherless—
but from my youth I reared them as a father would, and from my birth I guided the widow--18though from my youth I reared him as would a father, and from my mother’s womb I guided the widow—
if I have seen anyone perishing for lack of clothing, or the needy without garments,19if I have seen one perish for lack of clothing, or a needy man without a cloak,
and their hearts did not bless me for warming them with the fleece from my sheep,20if his heart has not blessed me for warming him with the fleece of my sheep,
if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, knowing that I had influence in court,21if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless because I saw that I had support in the gate,
then let my arm fall from the shoulder, let it be broken off at the joint.22then may my arm fall from my shoulder and be torn from its socket.
For I dreaded destruction from God, and for fear of his splendor I could not do such things.23For calamity from God terrifies me, and His splendor I cannot overpower.
"If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, 'You are my security,'24If I have put my trust in gold or called pure gold my security,
if I have rejoiced over my great wealth, the fortune my hands had gained,25if I have rejoiced in my great wealth because my hand had gained so much,
if I have regarded the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor,26if I have beheld the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor,
so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand offered them a kiss of homage,27so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,
then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.28this would also be an iniquity to be judged, for I would have denied God on high.
"If I have rejoiced at my enemy's misfortune or gloated over the trouble that came to him--29If I have rejoiced in my enemy’s ruin, or exulted when evil befell him—
I have not allowed my mouth to sin by invoking a curse against their life--30I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking for his life with a curse—
if those of my household have never said, 'Who has not been filled with Job's meat?'--31if the men of my house have not said, ‘Who is there who has not had his fill?’—
but no stranger had to spend the night in the street, for my door was always open to the traveler--32but no stranger had to lodge on the street, for my door has been open to the traveler—
if I have concealed my sin as people do, by hiding my guilt in my heart33if I have covered my transgressions like Adam by hiding my guilt in my heart,
because I so feared the crowd and so dreaded the contempt of the clans that I kept silent and would not go outside--34because I greatly feared the crowds and the contempt of the clans terrified me, so that I kept silent and would not go outside—
("Oh, that I had someone to hear me! I sign now my defense--let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser put his indictment in writing.35(Oh, that I had one to hear me! Here is my signature. Let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser compose an indictment.
Surely I would wear it on my shoulder, I would put it on like a crown.36Surely I would carry it on my shoulder and wear it like a crown.
I would give him an account of my every step; I would present it to him as to a ruler.)--37I would give account of all my steps; I would approach Him like a prince.)—
"if my land cries out against me and all its furrows are wet with tears,38if my land cries out against me and its furrows weep together,
if I have devoured its yield without payment or broken the spirit of its tenants,39if I have devoured its produce without payment or broken the spirit of its tenants,
then let briers come up instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley." The words of Job are ended.40then let briers grow instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley.” Thus conclude the words of Job.
