On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there,1On the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and
and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.2Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding as well.
When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."3When the wine ran out, Jesus' mother told Him, "They don't have any wine."
"Woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My hour has not yet come."4"What has this concern of yours to do with Me, woman?" Jesus asked. "My hour has not yet come.""
His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."5Do whatever He tells you," His mother told the servants.
Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.6Now six stone water jars had been set there for Jewish purification. Each contained 20 or 30 gallons.
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.7"Fill the jars with water," Jesus told them. So they filled them to the brim.
Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so,8Then He said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the chief servant." And they did.
and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside9When the chief servant tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from--though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom
and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."10and told him, "Everyone sets out the fine wine first, then, after people have drunk freely, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now."
What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.11Jesus performed this first sign in Cana of Galilee. He displayed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.12After this, He went down to Capernaum, together with His mother, His brothers, and His disciples, and they stayed there only a few days.
When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.13The Jewish Passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.14In the temple complex He found people selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and He also found the money changers sitting there.
So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.15After making a whip out of cords, He drove everyone out of the temple complex with their sheep and oxen. He also poured out the money changers' coins and overturned the tables.
To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father's house into a market!"16He told those who were selling doves, "Get these things out of here! Stop turning My Father's house into a marketplace!"
His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."17And His disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for Your house will consume Me.
The Jews then responded to him, "What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?"18So the Jews replied to Him, "What sign of authority will You show us for doing these things?"
Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days."19Jesus answered, "Destroy this sanctuary, and I will raise it up in three days."
They replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?"20Therefore the Jews said, "This sanctuary took 46 years to build, and will You raise it up in three days?"
But the temple he had spoken of was his body.21But He was speaking about the sanctuary of His body.
After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.22So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. And they believed the Scripture and the statement Jesus had made.
Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name.23While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many trusted in His name when they saw the signs He was doing.
But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people.24Jesus, however, would not entrust Himself to them, since He knew them all
He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.25and because He did not need anyone to testify about man; for He Himself knew what was in man.
