| 1For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. | 1Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; |
| 2They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. | 2And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; |
| 3They all ate the same spiritual food | 3And did all eat the same spiritual meat; |
| 4and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. | 4And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. |
| 5Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. | 5But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. |
| 6Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. | 6Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. |
| 7Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry." | 7Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. |
| 8We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did--and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. | 8Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. |
| 9We should not test Christ, as some of them did--and were killed by snakes. | 9Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. |
| 10And do not grumble, as some of them did--and were killed by the destroying angel. | 10Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. |
| 11These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. | 11Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. |
| 12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! | 12Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. |
| 13No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. | 13There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. |
| 14Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. | 14Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. |
| 15I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. | 15I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. |
| 16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? | 16The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? |
| 17Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf. | 17For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. |
| 18Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? | 18Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? |
| 19Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? | 19What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? |
| 20No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. | 20But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. |
| 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons. | 21Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. |
| 22Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are we stronger than he? | 22Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? |
| 23"I have the right to do anything," you say--but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"--but not everything is constructive. | 23All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. |
| 24No one should seek their own good, but the good of others. | 24Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth. |
| 25Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, | 25Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake: |
| 26for, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it." | 26For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof. |
| 27If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. | 27If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. |
| 28But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. | 28But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: |
| 29I am referring to the other person's conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another's conscience? | 29Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience? |
| 30If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for? | 30For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? |
| 31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. | 31Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. |
| 32Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God-- | 32Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: |
| 33even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. | 33Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. |
