1This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah's sons, who themselves had sons after the flood. | 1Now these are the records of the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and sons were born to them after the flood. |
2The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshek and Tiras. | 2The sons of Japheth were Gomer and Magog and Madai and Javan and Tubal and Meshech and Tiras. |
3The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. | 3The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz and Riphath and Togarmah. |
4The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittites and the Rodanites. | 4The sons of Javan were Elishah and Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim. |
5(From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.) | 5From these the coastlands of the nations were separated into their lands, every one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations. |
6The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan. | 6The sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan. |
7The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteka. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. | 7The sons of Cush were Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. |
8Cush was the father of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. | 8Now Cush became the father of Nimrod; he became a mighty one on the earth. |
9He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD." | 9He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the LORD." |
10The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar. | 10The beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. |
11From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah | 11From that land he went forth into Assyria, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, |
12and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah--which is the great city. | 12and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. |
13Egypt was the father of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, | 13Mizraim became the father of Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim |
14Pathrusites, Kasluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites. | 14and Pathrusim and Casluhim (from which came the Philistines) and Caphtorim. |
15Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites, | 15Canaan became the father of Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth |
16Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, | 16and the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite |
17Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, | 17and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite |
18Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. Later the Canaanite clans scattered | 18and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. |
19and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha. | 19The territory of the Canaanite extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. |
20These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations. | 20These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations. |
21Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber. | 21Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the older brother of Japheth, children were born. |
22The sons of Shem: Elam, Ashur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram. | 22The sons of Shem were Elam and Asshur and Arpachshad and Lud and Aram. |
23The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether and Meshek. | 23The sons of Aram were Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash. |
24Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber. | 24Arpachshad became the father of Shelah; and Shelah became the father of Eber. |
25Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan. | 25Two sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. |
26Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, | 26Joktan became the father of Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah |
27Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, | 27and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah |
28Obal, Abimael, Sheba, | 28and Obal and Abimael and Sheba |
29Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan. | 29and Ophir and Havilah and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. |
30The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country. | 30Now their settlement extended from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the hill country of the east. |
31These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations. | 31These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, according to their nations. |
32These are the clans of Noah's sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood. | 32These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, by their nations; and out of these the nations were separated on the earth after the flood. |
