Genesis 10
1. The generations of Noah.
2. Japheth.
6. Ham.
8. Nimrod becomes the first monarch; the descendants of Canaan.
21. The sons of Shem.

Mizraim was the father of the Ludites
Mizraim is traditionally understood to represent Egypt, as the name is often used in the Hebrew Bible to refer to the nation. The Ludites are believed to be a people group associated with the region of North Africa or the Near East. Some scholars suggest a connection to the Lydians of Asia Minor, though this is debated. The mention of Mizraim as their progenitor highlights the spread of nations from Noah's descendants, emphasizing the fulfillment of God's command to fill the earth (Genesis 9:1).

the Anamites
The Anamites are a lesser-known group, with limited historical and archaeological evidence. They are listed among the descendants of Mizraim, suggesting they were part of the broader Egyptian or North African cultural sphere. This inclusion underscores the diversity of peoples that emerged from Noah's lineage, reflecting the complexity of ancient Near Eastern ethnography.

the Lehabites
The Lehabites are often associated with the Libyans, an ancient people located to the west of Egypt. This connection is supported by geographical proximity and historical interactions between Egypt and Libya. The Lehabites' mention in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10) illustrates the interconnectedness of ancient civilizations and the spread of humanity across different regions.

the Naphtuhites
The Naphtuhites are another group descended from Mizraim, with limited specific historical references. Some scholars suggest a connection to the region of Lower Egypt, possibly near the Nile Delta. Their inclusion in the genealogical record serves to highlight the various branches of Egyptian civilization and their role in the broader narrative of human history as outlined in Genesis.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Mizraim
Mizraim is traditionally understood to be the ancestor of the Egyptians. The name "Mizraim" is often used in the Hebrew Bible to refer to Egypt itself. In Hebrew, "Mizraim" is the dual form of "Matzor," meaning "double straits," possibly referring to Upper and Lower Egypt.

2. Ludites
Descendants of Mizraim, the Ludites are believed to be associated with the region of Lydia in Asia Minor, although some scholars suggest a connection to a group in North Africa.

3. Anamites
Another group descended from Mizraim, the Anamites are less clearly identified in historical records, but they are part of the broader Egyptian lineage.

4. Lehabites
Also known as the Libyans, the Lehabites are associated with the region west of Egypt, indicating the spread of Mizraim's descendants into North Africa.

5. Naphtuhites
This group is also descended from Mizraim, and like the Anamites, they are not well-documented outside of biblical genealogies, but they are considered part of the Egyptian lineage.

What Does Genesis 10:13 Mean
Mizraim was the father

Genesis records, “Mizraim was the father of the Ludites, the Anamites, the Lehabites, and the Naphtuhites” (Genesis 10:13).

• Mizraim is a direct son of Ham (Genesis 10:6; 1 Chronicles 1:8).

• The name is the ordinary Old Testament term for Egypt (Psalm 78:51; Isaiah 19:1), anchoring these genealogies to real geography.

• Scripture presents Mizraim as the progenitor of Egypt’s early peoples, showing how God repopulated the earth after the Flood (Genesis 9:1).

• Just as God promised that Noah’s family would fill the world, this simple clause documents one branch of that fulfillment.

the Ludites

• Also called “Ludim,” they reappear when Egypt summons allies (Jeremiah 46:9; Ezekiel 27:10; 30:5).

• Their skill with the bow (Isaiah 66:19) hints at a warrior culture dispersed through northern Africa or the eastern Mediterranean.

• Because Scripture ties them to Mizraim, we can confidently see them as an Egyptian-related clan, even if their exact later homeland shifted.

• These verses remind us that God knows every tribe’s origin and movements.

the Anamites

• Named again only in 1 Chronicles 1:11, the Anamites are otherwise silent in Scripture—yet their inclusion confirms that the Bible’s genealogies are complete, not selective.

• Likely situated in the Nile Delta, they illustrate how many smaller groups sprouted from Mizraim before fading from the wider biblical story.

• The text’s precision encourages us: even the least-known peoples were noticed by God.

the Lehabites

• Elsewhere called “Lehabim,” they seem linked to the Lubim who fight beside Egypt (2 Chronicles 12:3; 16:8; Nahum 3:9).

• Their appearance in prophetic judgments (Ezekiel 30:5) situates them west of Egypt, among today’s Libyan regions.

• Each reference fulfills the promise that nations rise, fall, and answer to the Lord of history (Psalm 22:28).

the Naphtuhites

• Mentioned with the same wording in 1 Chronicles 1:11, this clan probably settled near the Nile’s central delta, an area later called “Memphis” (Jeremiah 46:19).

• Though no exploits are recorded, their listing shows that every branch of humanity traces back to the post-Flood covenant family (Genesis 9:9–10).

• Their obscurity does not diminish their value; God catalogues them alongside more famous peoples.

summary

Genesis 10:13 is far more than a footnote; it certifies that God meticulously fulfilled His command to “be fruitful and multiply” after the Flood. By naming Mizraim and four distinct clans—Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, and Naphtuhites—Scripture provides a trustworthy map of early nations, reminding us that every people group stems from one divinely guided lineage and remains under the sovereign eye of the Creator.

(13, 14) "With Mizraim are connected seven inferior African races, the names of which are given in the plural, namely:--

1. The Ludim.--There were two races of this name: one Semitic, descended from Lud, the son of Shem (Genesis 10:22), and mentioned in Isaiah 66:19; the other Hamite, and subject to the Pharaohs ( Jeremiah 46:9; Ezekiel 30:5). They seem to have inhabited the Nile valley, but their exact position is unknown.

2. The Anamim.--Knobel gives some reasons for supposing this race to have inhabited the Delta.

3. The Lehabim.--Probably the same as the Lubim of 2Chronicles 12:3; 2Chronicles 16:8; Daniel 11:43; Nahum 3:9. Their home was on the western side of the Delta. . . .

Verse 13. - And Mizraim begat Ludim. An African tribe, a colony of the Egyptians, like the next seven, which are "nomina non singulorum hominum sed populorum" (Aben Ezra, Michaelis, Rosenmüller, Kalisch, Murphy); probably referred to in connection with Tarshish and Put (Isaiah 66:19), with Kush and Put (Jeremiah 46:9), and in connection with Put (Ezekiel 27:10; Ezekiel 30:5). Lud (ver. 22) was Shemitic. And Anamim. Not elsewhere mentioned; the inhabitants of the Delta (Knobel). And Lehabim. Lubim (2 Chronicles 12:3; Daniel 2:43; Nahum 3:9); Libyans (Daniel 11:43); probably the Libyaus west of Egypt (Michaelis, Kalisch, Murphy). And Naphtuhim. Nephthys, near Pelusium; on the Lake Sirbenis (Bochart); the Libyan town Napata (Kalisch); the people of Middle Egypt (Knobel).
