New King James Version | English Standard Version |
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. | 1Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. |
For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, | 2For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, |
how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, | 3how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, |
God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? | 4while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. |
For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. | 5For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. |
But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? | 6It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? |
You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands. | 7You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, |
You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. | 8putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. |
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. | 9But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. |
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. | 10For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. |
For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, | 11For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, |
saying: “I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.” | 12saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” |
And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And again: “Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.” | 13And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” |
Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, | 14Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, |
and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. | 15and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. |
For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham. | 16For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. |
Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. | 17Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. |
For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. | 18For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. |
