Psalm 55
NKJV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New King James VersionEnglish Standard Version
To the Chief Musician. With stringed instruments. A Contemplation of David. Give ear to my prayer, O God, And do not hide Yourself from my supplication.1Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!
Attend to me, and hear me; I am restless in my complaint, and moan noisily,2Attend to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and I moan,
Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the oppression of the wicked; For they bring down trouble upon me, And in wrath they hate me.3because of the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they drop trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me.
My heart is severely pained within me, And the terrors of death have fallen upon me.4My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me, And horror has overwhelmed me.5Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me.
So I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.6And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest;
Indeed, I would wander far off, And remain in the wilderness. Selah7yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah
I would hasten my escape From the windy storm and tempest.”8I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and tempest.”
Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues, For I have seen violence and strife in the city.9Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they go around it on its walls; Iniquity and trouble are also in the midst of it.10Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it;
Destruction is in its midst; Oppression and deceit do not depart from its streets.11ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace.
For it is not an enemy who reproaches me; Then I could bear it. Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me; Then I could hide from him.12For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him.
But it was you, a man my equal, My companion and my acquaintance.13But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend.
We took sweet counsel together, And walked to the house of God in the throng.14We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng.
Let death seize them; Let them go down alive into hell, For wickedness is in their dwellings and among them.15Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.
As for me, I will call upon God, And the LORD shall save me.16But I call to God, and the LORD will save me.
Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, And He shall hear my voice.17Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice.
He has redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against me, For there were many against me.18He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me.
God will hear, and afflict them, Even He who abides from of old. Selah Because they do not change, Therefore they do not fear God.19God will give ear and humble them, he who is enthroned from of old, Selah because they do not change and do not fear God.
He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; He has broken his covenant.20My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant.
The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, But war was in his heart; His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords.21His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.
Cast your burden on the LORD, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.22Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
But You, O God, shall bring them down to the pit of destruction; Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; But I will trust in You.23But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you.
