New King James Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us, The deeds You did in their days, In days of old: | 1For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. God, we have heard with our ears-- our ancestors have told us-- the work You accomplished in their days, in days long ago: |
You drove out the nations with Your hand, But them You planted; You afflicted the peoples, and cast them out. | 2to plant them, You drove out the nations with Your hand; to settle them, You crushed the peoples. |
For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, Because You favored them. | 3For they did not take the land by their sword-- their arm did not bring them victory-- but by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You were pleased with them. |
You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob. | 4You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. |
Through You we will push down our enemies; Through Your name we will trample those who rise up against us. | 5Through You we drive back our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. |
For I will not trust in my bow, Nor shall my sword save me. | 6For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. |
But You have saved us from our enemies, And have put to shame those who hated us. | 7But You give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. |
In God we boast all day long, And praise Your name forever. Selah | 8We boast in God all day long; we will praise Your name forever. Selah |
But You have cast us off and put us to shame, And You do not go out with our armies. | 9But You have rejected and humiliated us; You do not march out with our armies. |
You make us turn back from the enemy, And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves. | 10You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. |
You have given us up like sheep intended for food, And have scattered us among the nations. | 11You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. |
You sell Your people for next to nothing, And are not enriched by selling them. | 12You sell Your people for nothing; You make no profit from selling them. |
You make us a reproach to our neighbors, A scorn and a derision to those all around us. | 13You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. |
You make us a byword among the nations, A shaking of the head among the peoples. | 14You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. |
My dishonor is continually before me, And the shame of my face has covered me, | 15My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, |
Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the enemy and the avenger. | 16because of the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. |
All this has come upon us; But we have not forgotten You, Nor have we dealt falsely with Your covenant. | 17All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. |
Our heart has not turned back, Nor have our steps departed from Your way; | 18Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. |
But You have severely broken us in the place of jackals, And covered us with the shadow of death. | 19But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God, Or stretched out our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, |
Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. | 21wouldn't God have found this out, since He knows the secrets of the heart? |
Yet for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. | 22Because of You we are slain all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. |
Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not cast us off forever. | 23Wake up, LORD! Why are You sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever! |
Why do You hide Your face, And forget our affliction and our oppression? | 24Why do You hide Yourself and forget our affliction and oppression? |
For our soul is bowed down to the dust; Our body clings to the ground. | 25For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. |
Arise for our help, And redeem us for Your mercies’ sake. | 26Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of Your faithful love. |
