| 1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? | 1What should we say, then? Should we go on sinning so that grace may increase? |
| 2Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? | 2Of course not! How can we who died as far as sin is concerned go on living in it? |
| 3Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? | 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into union with the Messiah Jesus were baptized into his death? |
| 4Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. | 4Therefore, through baptism we were buried with him into his death so that, just as the Messiah was raised from the dead by the Father's glory, we too may live an entirely new life. |
| 5For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, | 5For if we have become united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. |

| 17But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. | 17But thank God that, though you were once slaves of sin, you became obedient from your hearts to that form of teaching with which you were entrusted! |
| 18And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. | 18And since you have been freed from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness. |
| 19I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. | 19I am speaking in simple terms because of the frailty of your human nature. Just as you once offered the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater disobedience, so now, in the same way, you must offer the parts of your body as slaves to righteousness that leads to sanctification. |
| 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. | 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were "free" as far as righteousness was concerned. |
| 21What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. | 21What benefit did you get from doing those things you are now ashamed of? For those things resulted in death. |
| 22But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. | 22But now that you have been freed from sin and have become God's slaves, the benefit you reap is sanctification, and the result is eternal life. |
| 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. | 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in union with the Messiah Jesus our Lord. |
