1Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead.

1Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead.

2There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him.

2A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him.

3Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

3Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.

4But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said,

4But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said,

5“Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”

5“That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.”

6This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.

6Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.

7But Jesus said, “Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial.

7Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial.

8For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”

8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

9Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.

9When all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.

10But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also,

10Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too,

11because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.

11for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted them and believed in Jesus. Jesus’ Triumphant Entry

12The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

12The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors

13took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ The King of Israel!”

13took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the LORD! Hail to the King of Israel!”

14Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:

14Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said:

15“Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”

15“Don’t be afraid, people of Jerusalem. Look, your King is coming, riding on a donkey’s colt.”

16His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.

16His disciples didn’t understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him.

17Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness.

17Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it.

18For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.

18That was the reason so many went out to meet him—because they had heard about this miraculous sign.

19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”

19Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!” Jesus Predicts His Death

20Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast.

20Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration

21Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”

21paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.”

22Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

22Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.

23But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.

23Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory.

24Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.

24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.

25He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

25 Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.

26If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

26 Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.

27“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.

27 “Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But this is the very reason I came!

28Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”

28 Father, bring glory to your name.” Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, “I have already brought glory to my name, and I will do so again.”

29Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”

29When the crowd heard the voice, some thought it was thunder, while others declared an angel had spoken to him.

30Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.

30Then Jesus told them, “The voice was for your benefit, not mine.

31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

31 The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.

32And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.”

32 And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.”

33This He said, signifying by what death He would die.

33He said this to indicate how he was going to die.

34The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”

34The crowd responded, “We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live forever. How can you say the Son of Man will die? Just who is this Son of Man, anyway?”

35Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.

35Jesus replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going.

36While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.

36 Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.” After saying these things, Jesus went away and was hidden from them. The Unbelief of the People

37But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him,

37But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in him.

38that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?”

38This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted: “LORD, who has believed our message? To whom has the LORD revealed his powerful arm?”

39Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:

39But the people couldn’t believe, for as Isaiah also said,

40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.”

40“The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts— so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.”

41These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

41Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this, because he saw the future and spoke of the Messiah’s glory.

42Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue;

42Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.

43for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

43For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.

44Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me.

44Jesus shouted to the crowds, “If you trust me, you are trusting not only me, but also God who sent me.

45And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.

45 For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me.

46I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.

46 I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.

47And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

47 I will not judge those who hear me but don’t obey me, for I have come to save the world and not to judge it.

48He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him— the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

48 But all who reject me and my message will be judged on the day of judgment by the truth I have spoken.

49For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.

49 I don’t speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to say it.

50And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”

50 And I know his commands lead to eternal life; so I say whatever the Father tells me to say.”
