New Living Translation | English Standard Version |
Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help! | 1Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy! |
Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles. | 2Attend to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and I moan, |
My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down. | 3because of the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they drop trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me. |
My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. | 4My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. |
Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking. | 5Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me. |
Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! | 6And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; |
I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude | 7yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah |
How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred. | 8I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and tempest.” |
Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city. | 9Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city. |
Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city. | 10Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it; |
Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets. | 11ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace. |
It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them. | 12For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him. |
Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. | 13But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. |
What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God. | 14We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng. |
Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them. | 15Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart. |
But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me. | 16But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. |
Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice. | 17Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. |
He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me. | 18He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me. |
God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God. | 19God will give ear and humble them, he who is enthroned from of old, Selah because they do not change and do not fear God. |
As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. | 20My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant. |
His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers! | 21His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. |
Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. | 22Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. |
But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me. | 23But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you. |
