Psalm 72
New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
Give your love of justice to the king, O God, and righteousness to the king’s son.1Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son!
Help him judge your people in the right way; let the poor always be treated fairly.2May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice!
May the mountains yield prosperity for all, and may the hills be fruitful.3Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness!
Help him to defend the poor, to rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their oppressors.4May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!
May they fear you as long as the sun shines, as long as the moon remains in the sky. Yes, forever!5May they fear you while the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!
May the king’s rule be refreshing like spring rain on freshly cut grass, like the showers that water the earth.6May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth!
May all the godly flourish during his reign. May there be abundant prosperity until the moon is no more.7In his days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more!
May he reign from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.8May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth!
Desert nomads will bow before him; his enemies will fall before him in the dust.9May desert tribes bow down before him, and his enemies lick the dust!
The western kings of Tarshish and other distant lands will bring him tribute. The eastern kings of Sheba and Seba will bring him gifts.10May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts!
All kings will bow before him, and all nations will serve him.11May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him!
He will rescue the poor when they cry to him; he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them.12For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper.
He feels pity for the weak and the needy, and he will rescue them.13He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy.
He will redeem them from oppression and violence, for their lives are precious to him.14From oppression and violence he redeems their life, and precious is their blood in his sight.
Long live the king! May the gold of Sheba be given to him. May the people always pray for him and bless him all day long.15Long may he live; may gold of Sheba be given to him! May prayer be made for him continually, and blessings invoked for him all the day!
May there be abundant grain throughout the land, flourishing even on the hilltops. May the fruit trees flourish like the trees of Lebanon, and may the people thrive like grass in a field.16May there be abundance of grain in the land; on the tops of the mountains may it wave; may its fruit be like Lebanon; and may people blossom in the cities like the grass of the field!
May the king’s name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun shines. May all nations be blessed through him and bring him praise.17May his name endure forever, his fame continue as long as the sun! May people be blessed in him, all nations call him blessed!
Praise the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does such wonderful things.18Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things.
Praise his glorious name forever! Let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen!19Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!
(This ends the prayers of David son of Jesse.)20The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are ended.
