This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. It began | 1This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. |
just as the prophet Isaiah had written: “Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way. | 2As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See! I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way. |
He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the LORD’s coming! Clear the road for him!’ ” | 3He is a voice calling out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!'" |
This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. | 4John was baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism about repentance for the forgiveness of sins. |
All of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. | 5People from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were flocking to him, being baptized by him while they confessed their sins. |
His clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey. | 6Now John was dressed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. He ate grasshoppers and wild honey. |
John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals. | 7He kept proclaiming, "The one who is coming after me is stronger than I am, and I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandal straps. |
I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!” The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus | 8I baptized you with water, but it is he who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." |
One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. | 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. |
As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove. | 10Just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens split open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. |
And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.” | 11Then a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you!" |
The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness, | 12At once the Spirit drove him into the wilderness. |
where he was tempted by Satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him. | 13He was in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted by Satan. He was among wild animals, and angels were ministering to him. |
Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God’s Good News. | 14Now after John had been arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the gospel about the kingdom of God. |
“The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!” The First Disciples | 15He said, "The time is now! The kingdom of God is near! Repent, and keep believing the gospel!" |
One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. | 16While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the sea because they were fishermen. |
Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” | 17Jesus told them, "Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of people!" |
And they left their nets at once and followed him. | 18So immediately they left their nets and followed him. |
A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John, in a boat repairing their nets. | 19Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat repairing their nets. |
He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men. Jesus Casts Out an Evil Spirit | 20He immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. |
Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. | 21Then they went to Capernaum. As soon as it was the Sabbaths, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. |
The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike the teachers of religious law. | 22The people were utterly amazed at his teaching, because he was teaching them like one with authority, and not like their scribes. |
Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, | 23All of a sudden, there was a man in their synagogue who had an unclean spirit! He screamed, |
“Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” | 24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!" |
But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. | 25But Jesus rebuked him. "Be quiet," he ordered, "and come out of him!" |
At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him. | 26At this, the unclean spirit shook the man, cried out with a loud voice, and came out of him. |
Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!” | 27All the people were so stunned that they kept saying to each other, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He tells even the unclean spirits what to do, and they obey him!" |
The news about Jesus spread quickly throughout the entire region of Galilee. Jesus Heals Many People | 28At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. |
After Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went to Simon and Andrew’s home. | 29After they left the synagogue, they went directly to the house of Simon and Andrew, along with James and John. |
Now Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right away. | 30Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed, sick with a fever, so they promptly told Jesus about her. |
So he went to her bedside, took her by the hand, and helped her sit up. Then the fever left her, and she prepared a meal for them. | 31He went up to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began serving them. |
That evening after sunset, many sick and demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. | 32When evening came, after the sun had set, people started bringing to him everyone who was sick or possessed by demons. |
The whole town gathered at the door to watch. | 33In fact, the whole city gathered at the door. |
So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons. But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to speak. Jesus Preaches in Galilee | 34He healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. However, he wouldn't allow the demons to speak because they knew who he was. |
Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray. | 35In the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went to a deserted place and prayed there. |
Later Simon and the others went out to find him. | 36Simon and his companions searched frantically for him. |
When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.” | 37When they found him, they told him, "Everyone's looking for you." |
But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.” | 38"Let's go to the neighboring town," he replied, "so I can preach there, too, because that's why I came." |
So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons. Jesus Heals a Man with Leprosy | 39So he went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. |
A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said. | 40Then a leper came to Jesus and began pleading with him. He fell on his knees and told him, "If you want to, you can make me clean." |
Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” | 41Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand, touched him, and told him, "I do want to. Be made clean!" |
Instantly the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed. | 42Instantly the leprosy left him, and he was clean. |
Then Jesus sent him on his way with a stern warning: | 43Then Jesus sternly warned him and encouraged him to go at once. |
“Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy. This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.” | 44He told the man, "Be sure that you don't tell anyone. Instead, go and show yourself to the priest, and then offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded as proof to the authorities." |
But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon surrounded Jesus, and he couldn’t publicly enter a town anywhere. He had to stay out in the secluded places, but people from everywhere kept coming to him. | 45But when the man left, he began to proclaim it freely. He spread the news so widely that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly, but had to stay out in deserted places. Still, people kept coming to him from everywhere. |
