New Living Translation | King James Bible |
I will sing of the LORD’s unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. | 1Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. |
Your unfailing love will last forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens. | 2For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens. |
The LORD said, “I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant. I have sworn this oath to him: | 3I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, |
‘I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’” Interlude | 4Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah. |
All heaven will praise your great wonders, LORD; myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness. | 5And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints. |
For who in all of heaven can compare with the LORD? What mightiest angel is anything like the LORD? | 6For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD? |
The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne. | 7God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him. |
O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies! Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O LORD? You are entirely faithful. | 8O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee? |
You rule the oceans. You subdue their storm-tossed waves. | 9Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them. |
You crushed the great sea monster. You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. | 10Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm. |
The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours—you created it all. | 11The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them. |
You created north and south. Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon praise your name. | 12The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name. |
Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength. | 13Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand. |
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants. | 14Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face. |
Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, LORD. | 15Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance. |
They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation. They exult in your righteousness. | 16In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted. |
You are their glorious strength. It pleases you to make us strong. | 17For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted. |
Yes, our protection comes from the LORD, and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king. | 18For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king. |
Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful people. You said, “I have raised up a warrior. I have selected him from the common people to be king. | 19Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. |
I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil. | 20I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: |
I will steady him with my hand; with my powerful arm I will make him strong. | 21With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him. |
His enemies will not defeat him, nor will the wicked overpower him. | 22The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him. |
I will beat down his adversaries before him and destroy those who hate him. | 23And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him. |
My faithfulness and unfailing love will be with him, and by my authority he will grow in power. | 24But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted. |
I will extend his rule over the sea, his dominion over the rivers. | 25I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers. |
And he will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’ | 26He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. |
I will make him my firstborn son, the mightiest king on earth. | 27Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. |
I will love him and be kind to him forever; my covenant with him will never end. | 28My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. |
I will preserve an heir for him; his throne will be as endless as the days of heaven. | 29His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. |
But if his descendants forsake my instructions and fail to obey my regulations, | 30If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; |
if they do not obey my decrees and fail to keep my commands, | 31If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; |
then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their disobedience with beating. | 32Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. |
But I will never stop loving him nor fail to keep my promise to him. | 33Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. |
No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said. | 34My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. |
I have sworn an oath to David, and in my holiness I cannot lie: | 35Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. |
His dynasty will go on forever; his kingdom will endure as the sun. | 36His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. |
It will be as eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!” Interlude | 37It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah. |
But now you have rejected him and cast him off. You are angry with your anointed king. | 38But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed. |
You have renounced your covenant with him; you have thrown his crown in the dust. | 39Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. |
You have broken down the walls protecting him and ruined every fort defending him. | 40Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin. |
Everyone who comes along has robbed him, and he has become a joke to his neighbors. | 41All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours. |
You have strengthened his enemies and made them all rejoice. | 42Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice. |
You have made his sword useless and refused to help him in battle. | 43Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle. |
You have ended his splendor and overturned his throne. | 44Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground. |
You have made him old before his time and publicly disgraced him. Interlude | 45The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah. |
O LORD, how long will this go on? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your anger burn like fire? | 46How long, LORD? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire? |
Remember how short my life is, how empty and futile this human existence! | 47Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain? |
No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave. Interlude | 48What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah. |
Lord, where is your unfailing love? You promised it to David with a faithful pledge. | 49Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth? |
Consider, Lord, how your servants are disgraced! I carry in my heart the insults of so many people. | 50Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people; |
Your enemies have mocked me, O LORD; they mock your anointed king wherever he goes. | 51Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O LORD; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed. |
Praise the LORD forever! Amen and amen! | 52Blessed be the LORD for evermore. Amen, and Amen. |
