New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
“I am disgusted with my life. Let me complain freely. My bitter soul must complain. | 1"I loathe my own life; I will give full vent to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. |
I will say to God, ‘Don’t simply condemn me— tell me the charge you are bringing against me. | 2"I will say to God, 'Do not condemn me; Let me know why You contend with me. |
What do you gain by oppressing me? Why do you reject me, the work of your own hands, while smiling on the schemes of the wicked? | 3'Is it right for You indeed to oppress, To reject the labor of Your hands, And to look favorably on the schemes of the wicked? |
Are your eyes like those of a human? Do you see things only as people see them? | 4'Have You eyes of flesh? Or do You see as a man sees? |
Is your lifetime only as long as ours? Is your life so short | 5'Are Your days as the days of a mortal, Or Your years as man's years, |
that you must quickly probe for my guilt and search for my sin? | 6That You should seek for my guilt And search after my sin? |
Although you know I am not guilty, no one can rescue me from your hands. | 7'According to Your knowledge I am indeed not guilty, Yet there is no deliverance from Your hand. |
“‘You formed me with your hands; you made me, yet now you completely destroy me. | 8'Your hands fashioned and made me altogether, And would You destroy me? |
Remember that you made me from dust— will you turn me back to dust so soon? | 9'Remember now, that You have made me as clay; And would You turn me into dust again? |
You guided my conception and formed me in the womb. | 10'Did You not pour me out like milk And curdle me like cheese; |
You clothed me with skin and flesh, and you knit my bones and sinews together. | 11Clothe me with skin and flesh, And knit me together with bones and sinews? |
You gave me life and showed me your unfailing love. My life was preserved by your care. | 12'You have granted me life and lovingkindness; And Your care has preserved my spirit. |
“‘Yet your real motive— your true intent— | 13'Yet these things You have concealed in Your heart; I know that this is within You: |
was to watch me, and if I sinned, you would not forgive my guilt. | 14If I sin, then You would take note of me, And would not acquit me of my guilt. |
If I am guilty, too bad for me; and even if I’m innocent, I can’t hold my head high, because I am filled with shame and misery. | 15If I am wicked, woe to me! And if I am righteous, I dare not lift up my head. I am sated with disgrace and conscious of my misery. |
And if I hold my head high, you hunt me like a lion and display your awesome power against me. | 16Should my head be lifted up, You would hunt me like a lion; And again You would show Your power against me. |
Again and again you witness against me. You pour out your growing anger on me and bring fresh armies against me. | 17'You renew Your witnesses against me And increase Your anger toward me; Hardship after hardship is with me. |
“‘Why, then, did you deliver me from my mother’s womb? Why didn’t you let me die at birth? | 18'Why then have You brought me out of the womb? Would that I had died and no eye had seen me! |
It would be as though I had never existed, going directly from the womb to the grave. | 19'I should have been as though I had not been, Carried from womb to tomb.' |
I have only a few days left, so leave me alone, that I may have a moment of comfort | 20"Would He not let my few days alone? Withdraw from me that I may have a little cheer |
before I leave—never to return— for the land of darkness and utter gloom. | 21Before I go-- and I shall not return-- To the land of darkness and deep shadow, |
It is a land as dark as midnight, a land of gloom and confusion, where even the light is dark as midnight.’” | 22The land of utter gloom as darkness itself, Of deep shadow without order, And which shines as the darkness." |
