The Parable of the Sower

(Matthew 13:1-9; Mark 4:1-9)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
4While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable:4And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable,4When a large crowd was coming together, and those from the various cities were journeying to Him, He spoke by way of a parable:4And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable:4As a large crowd was gathering, and people were flocking to Him from every town, He said in a parable:
5"A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up.5“A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it.5"The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled under foot and the birds of the air ate it up.5A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.5"A sower went out to sow his seed. As he was sowing, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky ate it up.
6Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.6And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.6"Other seed fell on rocky soil, and as soon as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.6And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.6Other seed fell on the rock; when it sprang up, it withered, since it lacked moisture.
7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.7And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.7"Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out.7And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.7Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns sprang up with it and choked it.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear."8And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”8"Other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as great." As He said these things, He would call out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."8And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.8Still other seed fell on good ground; when it sprang up, it produced a crop: 100 times what was sown." As He said this, He called out, "Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!"
9His disciples asked him what this parable meant.9And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant,9His disciples began questioning Him as to what this parable meant.9And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?9Then His disciples asked Him, "What does this parable mean?"
10He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, "'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.'10he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’10And He said, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that SEEING THEY MAY NOT SEE, AND HEARING THEY MAY NOT UNDERSTAND.10And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.10So He said, "The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.
11"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.11Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.11"Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God.11Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.11"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.
12Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.12The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.12"Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved.12Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.12The seed along the path are those who have heard and then the Devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
13Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.13And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away.13"Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away.13They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.13And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, welcome the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and depart in a time of testing.
14The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.14And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.14"The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity.14And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.14As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit.
15But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.15As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.15"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.15But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.15But the seed in the good ground--these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, bear fruit.

The Lesson of the Lamp

(Mark 4:21-25)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
16"No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.16“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.16"Now no one after lighting a lamp covers it over with a container, or puts it under a bed; but he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light.16No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.16"No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light.
17For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.17For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.17"For nothing is hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light.17For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.17For nothing is concealed that won't be revealed, and nothing hidden that won't be made known and come to light.
18Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them."18Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”18"So take care how you listen; for whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him."18Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.18Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him."

Jesus' Mother and Brothers

(Matthew 12:46-50; Mark 3:31-35)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
19Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd.19Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd.19And His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd.19Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.19Then His mother and brothers came to Him, but they could not meet with Him because of the crowd.
20Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you."20And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.”20And it was reported to Him, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You."20And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.20He was told, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You."
21He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice."21But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”21But He answered and said to them, "My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it."21And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.21But He replied to them, "My mother and My brothers are those who hear and do the word of God."

Jesus Stills the Storm

(Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
22One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out.22One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out,22Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." So they launched out.22Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.22One day He and His disciples got into a boat, and He told them, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So they set out,
23As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.23and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger.23But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger.23But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.23and as they were sailing He fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake; they were being swamped and were in danger.
24The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.24And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.24They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm.24And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.24They came and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to die!" Then He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves. So they ceased, and there was a calm.
25"Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him."25He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”25And He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?"25And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.25He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed, asking one another, "Who can this be? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey Him!"

Demons Cast into Pigs

(Matthew 8:28-34; Mark 5:1-20)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
26They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.26Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.26Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.26And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.26Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.
27When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.27When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs.27And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs.27And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.27When He got out on land, a demon-possessed man from the town met Him. For a long time he had worn no clothes and did not stay in a house but in the tombs.
28When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!"28When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.”28Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me."28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What do You have to do with me, Jesus, You Son of the Most High God? I beg You, don't torment me!"
29For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.29For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.)29For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.29(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)29For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places.

30Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him.30Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him.30And Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him.30And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.30"What is your name?" Jesus asked him." Legion," he said--because many demons had entered him.
31And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.31And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss.31They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss.31And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.31And they begged Him not to banish them to the abyss.
32A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission.32Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission.32Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine. And He gave them permission.32And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.32A large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. The demons begged Him to permit them to enter the pigs, and He gave them permission.
33When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.33Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.33And the demons came out of the man and entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.33Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.33The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
34When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside,34When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country.34When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and reported it in the city and out in the country.34When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.34When the men who tended them saw what had happened, they ran off and reported it in the town and in the countryside.

35and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.35Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.35The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened.35Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.35Then people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man the demons had departed from, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.
36Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured.36And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed.36Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well.36They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.36Meanwhile, the eyewitnesses reported to them how the demon-possessed man was delivered.
37Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.37Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned.37And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes and the surrounding district asked Him to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear; and He got into a boat and returned.37Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.37Then all the people of the Gerasene region asked Him to leave them, because they were gripped by great fear. So getting into the boat, He returned.
38The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,38The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,38But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might accompany Him; but He sent him away, saying,38Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,38The man from whom the demons had departed kept begging Him to be with Him. But He sent him away and said,
39"Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.39“Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.39"Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.39Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.39"Go back to your home, and tell all that God has done for you." And off he went, proclaiming throughout the town all that Jesus had done for him.

41Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come to his house41And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. 42because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him.42for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As Jesus went, the people pressed around him.42for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him.42For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. 43And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her.43And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone.43And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone,43And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,43A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years, who had spent all she had on doctors yet could not be healed by any,

45"Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you."45And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!”45And Jesus said, "Who is the one who touched Me?" And while they were all denying it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You."45And Jesus said, Who touched me? When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the crowds are hemming You in and pressing against You."
46But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me."46But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.”46But Jesus said, "Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that power had gone out of Me."46And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.46"Someone did touch Me," said Jesus. "I know that power has gone out from Me."
47Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed.47And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed.47When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and declared in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed.47And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.47When the woman saw that she was discovered, she came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she declared the reason she had touched Him and how she was instantly cured.
48Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."48And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”48And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace."48And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.48"Daughter," He said to her, "your faith has made you well. Go in peace."

49While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the teacher anymore."49While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.”49While He was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore."49While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.49While He was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue leader's house, saying, "Your daughter is dead. Don't bother the Teacher anymore."
50Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed."50But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.”50But when Jesus heard this, He answered him, "Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be made well."50But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.50When Jesus heard it, He answered him, "Don't be afraid. Only believe, and she will be made well."
51When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother.51And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child.51When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the girl's father and mother.51And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.51After He came to the house, He let no one enter with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child's father and mother.
52Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She is not dead but asleep."52And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.”52Now they were all weeping and lamenting for her; but He said, "Stop weeping, for she has not died, but is asleep."52And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.52Everyone was crying and mourning for her. But He said, "Stop crying, for she is not dead but asleep."
53They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.53And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.53And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died.53And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.53They started laughing at Him, because they knew she was dead.

54But he took her by the hand and said, "My child, get up!"54But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.”54He, however, took her by the hand and called, saying, "Child, arise!"54And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.54So He took her by the hand and called out, "Child, get up!"
55Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.55And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat.55And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He gave orders for something to be given her to eat.55And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.55Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then He gave orders that she be given something to eat.
56Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.56And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.56Her parents were amazed; but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened.56And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.56Her parents were astounded, but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened.
