Context
The Lesson of the Lamp
16No one lights a lamp and covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he sets it on a stand, so those who enter can see the light. 17For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light. 18Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen. Whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”…

For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed
This phrase emphasizes the omniscience of God, who sees all things. In biblical context, it reflects the idea that God's truth and justice will ultimately prevail. This aligns with the teachings found in Ecclesiastes 12:14, where it is stated that God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing. The phrase also serves as a warning to believers to live transparently and righteously, as all actions and intentions will eventually be revealed.

and nothing concealed that will not be made known
This part of the verse underscores the inevitability of divine revelation. It suggests that all secrets, whether good or bad, will be exposed. This is consistent with the theme found in 1 Corinthians 4:5, where Paul speaks of the Lord bringing to light what is hidden in darkness and exposing the motives of the heart. Historically, this would have resonated with early Christians who faced persecution and needed reassurance that truth and justice would ultimately triumph.

and brought to light
The imagery of light is significant throughout Scripture, often symbolizing truth, purity, and the presence of God. In John 8:12, Jesus refers to Himself as the "light of the world," indicating that He is the source of truth and revelation. This phrase assures believers that God's light will penetrate all darkness, revealing the true nature of all things. It serves as both a comfort and a call to live in accordance with God's will, knowing that His light will ultimately illuminate all aspects of life.

Teaching Points
The Nature of Truth
Truth is inherently revealing. As followers of Christ, we are called to live in the light, embracing honesty and transparency in our lives.

God's Omniscience
God knows all things, and nothing is hidden from Him. This should encourage us to live with integrity, knowing that our actions and thoughts are seen by God.

The Role of Light
Light symbolizes truth and revelation. As Christians, we are called to be bearers of light, sharing the Gospel and living in a way that reflects God's truth.

Accountability and Judgment
There will be a time when all hidden things are revealed. This serves as a reminder of the coming judgment and the importance of living righteously.

Encouragement in Trials
For those facing persecution or injustice, this verse offers hope that truth will ultimately prevail, and God's justice will be revealed.(17) For nothing is secret.--Another of the maxims which were often in our Lord's lips, and applied as circumstances presented themselves. In Matthew 10:26 (where see Note) it forms part of the charge to the twelve Apostles; here it follows on the interpretation of the parable of the Sower; in Luke 12:2 it points the moral of the uselessness of hypocrisy.

Verse 17. - For nothing is secret, that shall net be made manifest; neither anything hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. "All will gradually become clear to them. Whilst the night thickens over Israel on account of its unbelief, the disciples will advance into even fuller light, until there is nothing left in the plan of God which is obscure or hidden. The heart of Jesus is lifted up at this prospect. This accounts for the poetical rhythm which always appears at such moments" (Godet). This is very good, but Godet scarcely goes far enough. The Master's words surely promise that, as the ages advance, more and ever more light on the subject of God's dealings with men will be vouchsafed to the humble, patient searcher after the Divine wisdom. This apophthegm seems to have been a very favourite one of our Lord; he evidently used it on several occasions (see, for instance, Matthew 10:26, where the same words are reported to have been spoken in a different connection).
