How to show compassion like Jesus today?
How can we emulate Jesus' compassion for the "demon-possessed" today?

The Scene in Scripture

“Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you.” (Mark 5:19)

Jesus had just delivered the Gerasene man from a legion of demons (Mark 5:1-20). Notice His heart: He didn’t shame the man or draw attention to the spectacle. He focused on mercy, restoration, and reintegration into community.

Why Jesus’ Compassion Is Our Model

• Compassion moved Him to act (Matthew 14:14).

• Authority flowed from His union with the Father (John 5:19).

• Mercy dominated the message He sent home with the healed man (Mark 5:19).

• Scripture links deliverance to the gospel itself: “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8)

Recognizing the Real Battle Today

• Our struggle is “not against flesh and blood” (Ephesians 6:12).

• Spiritual oppression still exists, though it may hide behind modern labels.

• The gospel remains God’s power for salvation and freedom (Romans 1:16).

Practical Ways to Show Christ-like Compassion

1. See the Person, Not Just the Problem

• Speak dignity and worth (Genesis 1:27).

• Listen to their story without sensationalizing the darkness.

2. Pray with Faith and Authority

• “In My name they will drive out demons” (Mark 16:17).

• Combine fasting when the battle is stubborn (Mark 9:29).

3. Proclaim the Finished Work of Christ

• “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness” (Colossians 1:13).

• Use Scripture aloud; truth drives out lies (John 8:32).

4. Involve the Body of Christ

• Two or three in agreement carry weight (Matthew 18:19-20).

• Provide safe accountability, follow-up, and fellowship (Hebrews 10:24-25).

5. Offer Practical Support

• Help with counseling, medical care, or a place to stay if needed.

• Model steady, non-fearful friendship (2 Timothy 1:7).

6. Encourage Testimony

• Freedom stories magnify the Lord (Psalm 107:2; Mark 5:19).

• Testimony equips others to believe for their own deliverance (Revelation 12:11).

Guarding Our Own Walk as We Minister

• Stay submitted to God, resisting the devil (James 4:7).

• Keep short accounts with sin (1 John 1:9).

• Wear the full armor of God daily (Ephesians 6:13-18).

• Maintain a life of worship; darkness hates light (Psalm 22:3).

Encouraging the Freed to Live Free

• Disciple them in daily Scripture intake (Joshua 1:8).

• Teach them to fill the “empty house” with the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:24-26).

• Connect them to purposeful service—idleness invites old chains (Ephesians 2:10).

Key Scriptures for Further Meditation

Mark 1:23-27; Luke 4:18; Matthew 10:8; Acts 10:38; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5.

Closing Snapshot

Jesus’ compassion was inseparable from His authority. When we mirror His mercy, stand on His victory, and walk in His Spirit, we become conduits of the same liberating power that set the Gerasene man free.
