Revelation 21:6 – The Final Invitation

“And He told me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give freely from the spring of the water of life.’”

• Spoken by the Alpha and Omega—Christ Himself—at the close of Scripture

• “It is done!” links back to “It is finished” (John 19:30), signaling the completed redemptive plan

• The gift is “freely” given; grace, not merit, is the basis

• Offered to “the thirsty,” picturing a soul aware of its need

• “Water of life” is literal, eternal sustenance flowing from God’s own presence in the new creation

John 4:14 – The Personal Offer

“Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”

• Same Giver—Jesus—offers the same water, but here on earth to one Samaritan woman

• The promise moves from external supply to internal spring: the indwelling Spirit (John 7:37-39)

• “Never thirst” shows permanent satisfaction; the heart’s deepest longings are met in Him

• “Whoever” opens the door to every background, culture, and past

Living Water Across Scripture

Isaiah 55:1 — “Come, all you who are thirsty… buy without money and without cost.”

Jeremiah 2:13 — God is “the fountain of living water,” forsaken by those digging broken cisterns.

Psalm 36:8-9 — “You give them drink from Your river of delights… with You is the fountain of life.”

Exodus 17:6; 1 Corinthians 10:4 — Water from the stricken rock, a picture of Christ.

Revelation 22:1 — A river of life flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Revelation 22:17 — “Let the one who is thirsty come… take the water of life freely.”

The Source and Sufficiency of the Water

• Divine origin — flows from the throne (Revelation 22:1); Christ is both Giver and Source

• Cost-free — fully purchased by the Lamb’s sacrifice

• Pure and inexhaustible — “clear as crystal” (Revelation 22:1) and “never thirst” (John 4:14)

• Life-giving — imparts eternal life now (John 5:24) and forever (Revelation 21:6)

• Indwelling — becomes “a fount… within” through the Holy Spirit (John 7:38-39)

Receiving the Water Today

1. Recognize thirst—admit spiritual emptiness (Matthew 5:6).

2. Come to Christ—no other fountain satisfies (Acts 4:12).

3. Drink—trust Him personally, not merely agree intellectually (Romans 10:9-10).

4. Abide—continue drawing daily from His Word and Spirit (Colossians 2:6-7).

5. Overflow—living water streams outward in witness and service (John 7:38).

Eternal Significance

• The spring within (John 4) guarantees future access to the river (Revelation 21-22).

• Every redeemed believer will dwell where the water of life eternally flows, free from thirst, pain, or death (Revelation 21:4).

• What begins as a personal encounter at a well ends in corporate joy in the New Jerusalem—proof that Christ’s promise stands sure from first taste to final fulfillment.

How can we apply the promise of 'freely to the thirsty' in evangelism?
