Prioritize God's glory over the world?
How can we prioritize God's glory over worldly attractions, as warned in Psalm 106:20?

The Dangerous Exchange

Psalm 106:20 records Israel’s tragic swap: “They exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating ox.”

• This echoes Romans 1:23, where people “exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles”.

• Any time we trade the splendor of the living God for created things—possessions, applause, pleasure, security—we repeat the same folly.

Recognizing God’s Incomparable Glory

• Scripture insists that God alone is worthy of supreme honor (Isaiah 42:8; Revelation 4:11).

1 Chronicles 16:29 declares, “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering and come before Him; worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness”.

• Seeing His majesty in His Word, His works, and especially in Christ (Hebrews 1:3) fuels holy awe that pushes lesser attractions into proper perspective.

Identifying Modern “Grass-Eating Oxen”

• Materialism: craving more instead of stewarding what glorifies God (Luke 12:15).

• Image and acclaim: lusting for likes, followers, and praise of people (John 12:43).

• Sensual indulgence: entertainment or sexuality outside God’s design (1 John 2:16).

• Security idols: banking on career, savings, or government rather than God’s providence (Psalm 20:7).

• Religious substitutes: traditions, personalities, or experiences elevated above Christ (Colossians 2:8).

Practices that Guard Our Hearts

• Daily Scripture intake—renewing the mind (Romans 12:2).

• Unhurried worship—private and corporate, centering on God’s character (Psalm 95:1-6).

• Prayerful self-examination—asking where affections drift (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Joyful obedience—“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

• Generous giving—loosening the grip of possessions (2 Corinthians 9:7).

• Intentional fellowship—mutual exhortation against deceitful sin (Hebrews 3:13).

• Fasting from legitimate pleasures—training desires to seek the greater treasure (Matthew 9:15).

Living for His Glory in Daily Choices

• Set first priorities: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33).

• Filter decisions: “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

• Display distinct values: “Do not love the world or anything in the world” (1 John 2:15).

• Keep eyes on eternity: “When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:4).

Assurance and Hope

• Grace rescues idol-prone hearts: “You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1 Thessalonians 1:9).

• Ongoing transformation rests on the Spirit’s power: “We all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His image from glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

• As Christ is honored, joy deepens, and the watching world sees the beauty that no “grass-eating ox” can match.
