How can we honor God's name in our daily lives? Setting the Scene Ezekiel 36:21: “But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they had gone.” God’s reputation—His “holy name”—was dragged through the mud by Israel’s disobedience. He acted to defend that name. If we belong to Him, our daily choices either honor or profane His name before a watching world. Why God’s Name Deserves Honor • It reveals His character (Exodus 34:5-7) • It embodies His authority (Psalm 8:1) • It carries His saving power (Acts 4:12) • It must be hallowed (Matthew 6:9) • It will ultimately be exalted by every tongue (Philippians 2:10-11) Practical Ways to Honor His Name Each Day 1. Guard Our Words • Speak truthfully and graciously (Ephesians 4:29). • Refuse “empty oaths” or careless God-talk (Matthew 5:33-37). • Let praise, thanksgiving, and Scripture flavor conversation (Hebrews 13:15). 2. Live With Consistent Integrity • “Whatever you do…do it all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). • Keep promises and pay debts on time (Psalm 15:4). • Choose honesty when nobody is looking (Proverbs 11:3). 3. Reflect His Character in Relationships • Show forgiving mercy as He forgave us (Colossians 3:13). • Practice sacrificial love (John 13:34-35). • Demonstrate purity and faithfulness in marriage and singleness (Hebrews 13:4). 4. Set Apart Daily Time With Him • Meditate on His Word (Psalm 1:2). • Worship privately and publicly (Psalm 100:4). • Let His Spirit renew attitudes (Romans 12:2). 5. Represent Him Courageously • Speak of Christ when doors open (1 Peter 3:15). • Stand firm when pressured to compromise (Daniel 3:16-18). • Bless instead of retaliating (Romans 12:17-21). 6. Handle Resources as Stewards • Give generously and secretly (Matthew 6:3-4). • Work diligently, knowing “it is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24). • Treat creation responsibly, reflecting the Creator’s care (Genesis 1:28-31). 7. Seek Corporate Holiness • Commit to a Bible-preaching local church (Hebrews 10:24-25). • Pursue unity, avoiding gossip and division (Ephesians 4:3). • Use spiritual gifts to build others up (1 Peter 4:10-11). Encouragement to Persevere He who “concerned Himself for His holy name” also empowers His people: “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes” (Ezekiel 36:27). Rely on that promised Spirit. Each obedient step—no matter how ordinary—shines His name before neighbors, coworkers, and nations. |
