The choirmaster directed the singers and musicians so that the congregation could join in praise with reverence and unity before the Lord. Psa 13:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD?… With stringed instruments. Harps, lyres, and similar instruments accompanied Israel’s songs of worship. Their use reflects the God-given place of music in declaring His greatness and strengthening the faith of His people. Psa 61:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. Of David.… A Psalm. Psalm 67 belongs to the sacred songs collected for Israel’s worship and instruction. Its prayer begins with God’s blessing upon His covenant people and looks outward to the salvation of all nations. Psa 98:1 A Psalm. Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done wonders… A song. The psalm was intended to be sung by the gathered people of God. Its joyful character fits its central hope: that the whole earth will know God’s ways and praise Him. Psa 46:1 For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah.… May God be gracious to us and bless us, Israel appeals to God’s undeserved favor, acknowledging that every true blessing comes from Him. The prayer recalls the covenant promise that Abraham’s descendants would become a channel of blessing to all families of the earth (Genesis 12:3). Num 6:24-26 ‘May the LORD bless you and keep you;… and cause His face to shine upon us, God’s shining face portrays His favorable presence, protection, and peace. The words echo the priestly blessing of Numbers 6:24–26, where the Lord placed His name upon Israel. Divine blessing was not sought for private prosperity alone, but so that God’s saving power would become known among the nations. Psa 80:3 Restore us, O God, and cause Your face to shine upon us,… Selah A musical or worshipful pause calls the congregation to reflect on the mercy of God and the purpose of His blessing. Psa 3:2 Many say of me, “God will not deliver him.” Selah that Your ways may be known on earth, God called Israel to display His holiness, justice, and mercy before surrounding peoples. The nation’s obedience to His law was meant to reveal the character of the Lord who alone governs all the earth (Deuteronomy 4:6–8). Israel’s central location among ancient trade routes gave the nations repeated opportunity to hear of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The prayer reaches beyond Israel’s welfare to the worldwide acknowledgment of God’s righteous rule. Hab 2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory… Your salvation among all nations. God’s saving purpose has always included the nations, according to His promise that all families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham (Genesis 12:3). Deliverance granted to Israel pointed forward to the greater redemption accomplished by the Messiah. Jesus Christ brought salvation to Jew and Gentile alike, removing the dividing wall of hostility and forming one people through His cross (Ephesians 2:14–16). The psalm anticipates the command to make disciples of all nations and the future worship of a redeemed multitude from every people and language (Matthew 28:19–20; Revelation 7:9). Isa 52:10 The LORD has bared His holy arm in the sight of all the nations… Let the peoples praise You, O God; God’s praise is not confined to Israel but summons every nation to acknowledge the Creator and King of all the earth. Israel’s worship was meant to display God’s saving power before the nations, fulfilling His promise that all families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham’s offspring (Genesis 12:3). The blessing of God’s salvation carries a missionary purpose: redeemed people proclaim His greatness so that others may know Him. Psa 96:3 Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders… let all the peoples praise You. The repeated appeal anticipates the final gathering of believers from every nation, tribe, people, and language before God’s throne (Revelation 7:9–10). Through Christ, Gentiles who were once far from God are brought near and made fellow heirs of His promises (Ephesians 2:13–19). God will receive the universal worship that sin has resisted, and His house will stand as a house of prayer for all nations (Isaiah 56:7). Psa 117:1 Praise the LORD, all you nations! Extol Him… Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, God’s saving purpose reaches beyond Israel to every people and land. The promise given to Abraham included blessing for all families of the earth through his offspring, ultimately fulfilled in Christ. The worship of the nations anticipates the gathering of Gentiles into God’s people and the day when every nation will honor the King. Psa 100:1-2 A Psalm of thanksgiving. Make a joyful noise to the LORD,… for You judge the peoples justly The Lord governs without corruption, partiality, or error. His judgments defend the oppressed, expose wickedness, and establish righteousness among peoples often ruled by injustice. Jesus Christ, appointed by the Father as Judge of the living and the dead, will bring God’s perfect justice fully into view. Psa 9:8 He judges the world with justice; He governs the people… and lead the nations of the earth. The God who rules the nations also directs them according to His sovereign purposes. His guidance is like that of a shepherd who leads His flock into safety and provision. Through the gospel, He calls people from every nation to follow Christ and live under His gracious rule. Isa 49:10 They will not hunger or thirst, nor will scorching heat… Selah A pause invites worshipers to consider the joy of living beneath God’s righteous judgment and faithful leadership. Hab 2:20 But the LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth… Let the peoples praise You, O God; God’s redeeming purpose extends beyond Israel to every nation under heaven. The promise to Abraham included blessing for all the families of the earth through his offspring (Genesis 12:3), and Israel’s worship was meant to display the living God before the nations. Jesus Christ fulfills that promise, bringing salvation to Jew and Gentile alike and commanding His disciples to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). God is worthy of praise from every people because He alone is Creator, King, and Judge. Psa 117:1 Praise the LORD, all you nations! Extol Him… let all the peoples praise You. The repeated summons presses forward to the day when redeemed people from every nation, tribe, people, and language worship before God’s throne (Revelation 7:9–10). Christ has removed the barrier between Jew and Gentile, creating one people through His blood (Ephesians 2:14–16). The worldwide praise sought in the psalm anticipates the final reign of God, when the nations will acknowledge His holiness, righteousness, and saving mercy. Psa 66:4 All the earth bows down to You; they sing praise to You;… The earth has yielded its harvest; Israel’s harvests depended upon the Lord’s rain, seasons, and sustaining care. The ingathering of grain, wine, and oil brought thanksgiving before God, especially during the Feast of Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:39–43). Fruitful fields testified that the Creator remained faithful to His covenant order: “seedtime and harvest… shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). The abundance also anticipates the psalm’s wider purpose, that God’s saving ways would be known among all nations. Material provision was never meant to terminate in Israel’s comfort but to lead the world to recognize and praise the Lord. Lev 26:4 I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit… God, our God, blesses us. The God who rules the whole earth had bound Himself personally to Israel as their covenant God. His blessing included fertile land and security, but it also called His people to grateful obedience and holy worship. Israel’s enjoyment of God’s goodness was to display His character before the nations. Every true blessing ultimately finds its fullness in Christ, through whom God grants redemption and every spiritual blessing to His people (Ephesians 1:3). Psa 115:12-13 The LORD is mindful of us; He will bless us.… God blesses us, God’s favor rests on His people by covenant grace, supplying what they need and making His presence known among them. Israel’s harvest, peace, and security were tangible gifts from the Lord, yet they also pointed beyond material abundance to communion with the God who saves. The blessing promised to Abraham included the larger purpose that God would bless all families of the earth through his offspring. Psa 115:12-13 The LORD is mindful of us; He will bless us.… that all the ends of the earth Israel was never chosen merely for its own privilege. God’s works among His people were intended to reveal His name to every nation, from the lands surrounding Israel to the most distant peoples of the world. The mission anticipated here reaches its fulfillment through Jesus Christ, the promised seed of Abraham, whose gospel is proclaimed among all nations. Psa 22:27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD… shall fear Him. The nations are called to acknowledge the Lord with reverent awe, obedient worship, and recognition of His righteous rule. What Israel knew through God’s saving acts will one day be openly confessed throughout the earth. The redeemed from every people will honor Him, fulfilling the vision that all nations will worship before the Lord.
