Psalm 65
1. David praises God for his grace
4. The blessedness of God's chosen by reason of benefits

For the choirmaster.
This phrase indicates that the psalm was intended for public worship and was to be directed by the choirmaster, a leader of music in the temple. The role of the choirmaster was crucial in organizing and leading the musical aspects of worship, which were an integral part of Israelite religious life. This highlights the communal aspect of worship in ancient Israel.

A Psalm of David.
Attributed to King David, this psalm reflects his deep relationship with God and his role as a leader who often expressed his devotion through music and poetry. David's authorship connects the psalm to a period of Israel's history marked by the establishment of Jerusalem as the political and spiritual center of the nation.

A song.
The designation as a song suggests that this psalm was meant to be sung, emphasizing the importance of music in worship. Songs were used to express a range of emotions and theological truths, making them a powerful tool for teaching and communal expression.

Praise awaits You, O God, in Zion;
Zion refers to Jerusalem, the city of David, and the location of the temple, which was the center of Jewish worship. The phrase indicates that God is the focus of worship and that praise is due to Him. This reflects the belief that God dwells among His people in Zion, making it a place of divine presence and blessing. The anticipation of praise suggests a continual readiness to honor God.

to You our vows will be fulfilled.
Vows in the Old Testament were solemn promises made to God, often in response to His deliverance or blessing. Fulfilling vows was an act of worship and obedience, demonstrating faithfulness to God. This phrase underscores the importance of integrity and commitment in the believer's relationship with God, reflecting a covenantal understanding where God's faithfulness is met with human response.

Persons / Places / Events
1. God
The central figure of the Psalm, the one to whom praise is directed. He is depicted as the recipient of worship and the fulfiller of vows.

2. Zion
A significant place in biblical history, often representing the city of Jerusalem, the dwelling place of God, and a symbol of His presence among His people.

3. Psalmist
Traditionally attributed to David, the psalmist is the one expressing the praise and commitment to God.

4. Vows
These are promises or commitments made to God, often in response to His faithfulness or deliverance.

5. Praise
The act of worship and adoration directed towards God, acknowledging His greatness and goodness.
Teaching Points
The Centrality of Praise
Praise is not just an action but a state of readiness and anticipation. Our lives should be oriented towards glorifying God.

The Significance of Zion
Zion represents God's presence and His chosen place of worship. In a spiritual sense, believers are called to be a living Zion, where God's presence dwells.

The Importance of Vows
Making and fulfilling vows to God is a serious commitment. It reflects our trust in His faithfulness and our dedication to His purposes.

Worship as a Community
Praise and the fulfillment of vows are often communal activities, reminding us of the importance of gathering with other believers to worship God.

Living a Life of Worship
Our daily lives should reflect the praise and commitment we express in worship. Every action can be an act of worship when done for God's glory.(1) Praise waiteth . . .--Literally, To thee silence praise, which recalls Psalm 62:1 (see Note), but must be differently explained. To say, Praise is silence to thee, is hardly intelligible. The LXX. and Vulg. read differently, "praise is comely." Better supply a conjunction, To thee are quiet and praise, i.e., submissive expectation till the deliverance come (Psalm 62:1), and then exulting praise.

Shall the vow.--Better, Is the vow paid, i.e., by the praise just mentioned.

Verse 1. - Praise waiteth for thee, O God, in Zion; literally, there is silence praise (equivalent to "silent praise") for thee, O God, in Zion. There was, for the most part, a hushed silence in the tabernacle and temple, amid which silent prayer and praise were offered to God by the priests and Levites, and any lay persons who might be present (camp. 1 Samuel 1:13). And unto thee shall the vow be performed. When there was any special outpouring of praise in the temple, there would almost always be a performance of vows. Both depended on some deliverance or favour having been granted.
