The term "intreated" is an archaic form of the word "entreated," which means to ask earnestly or beseech. In the context of the Bible, it often refers to the act of earnestly pleading or making a request, typically in prayer or supplication to God. This term appears in various passages throughout the Scriptures, illustrating the nature of human interaction with the divine and with one another.

Biblical Usage

1. Prayer and Supplication: The concept of intreating is frequently associated with prayer, where individuals earnestly seek God's favor, guidance, or intervention. In the Old Testament, the patriarchs and prophets often intreated the Lord in times of need or distress. For example, in Genesis 25:21 , "Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived." Here, the act of intreating is depicted as a sincere and fervent prayer that results in divine response.

2. Intercession: Intreating can also involve interceding on behalf of others. Moses is a prime example of this, as he frequently intreated the Lord for the Israelites. In Exodus 32:11 , after the Israelites sinned by making the golden calf, "Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God, saying, 'O LORD, why does Your anger burn against Your people, whom You brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?'" Moses' intreaty is a powerful example of intercessory prayer, where he pleads for mercy on behalf of the people.

3. Human Relationships: The term is also used in the context of human relationships, where one person earnestly requests something from another. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul uses a form of this word when appealing to fellow believers. In Philemon 1:9-10 , Paul writes, "I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love. It is as none other than Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus—that I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whose father I became while I was in chains." Here, Paul is intreating Philemon to accept Onesimus, not as a slave, but as a brother in Christ.

4. Divine Response: The Bible often records that God is moved by the intreaties of His people. In 2 Chronicles 33:13 , we read about King Manasseh, who, after being taken captive, "prayed to Him, and God was moved by his entreaty and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God." This passage highlights the responsiveness of God to sincere and humble intreaty, even from those who have previously turned away from Him.

Theological Implications

The act of intreating underscores the relational aspect of faith, where believers are encouraged to approach God with their requests, trusting in His willingness to listen and respond. It reflects a posture of humility and dependence on God, recognizing His sovereignty and grace. The biblical examples of intreaty demonstrate that God values earnest prayer and is compassionate towards those who seek Him with a sincere heart.

In summary, "intreated" in the biblical sense involves earnest pleading or supplication, whether directed towards God or fellow humans. It is a significant aspect of the biblical narrative, illustrating the power of prayer, the importance of intercession, and the relational dynamics between God and His people.
