Joseph's Interpretation
Jump to: SubtopicsTerms
Topical Encyclopedia
Joseph, the son of Jacob and Rachel, is a central figure in the Book of Genesis, known for his ability to interpret dreams, a gift attributed to divine inspiration. His account is primarily found in Genesis chapters 37-50. Joseph's interpretations play a crucial role in his life and the lives of those around him, ultimately leading to the preservation of the nation of Israel during a time of famine.

Early Life and Dreams

Joseph's journey begins with his own dreams, which he shares with his family. In Genesis 37:5-11, Joseph dreams of sheaves of grain bowing to his sheaf and the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowing to him. These dreams foreshadow his future rise to power and the eventual submission of his family to his authority. His brothers, already envious of their father's favoritism towards Joseph, are further incensed by these dreams, leading to their betrayal and Joseph's subsequent sale into slavery.

Interpretation in Egypt

While in Egypt, Joseph's ability to interpret dreams becomes evident. After being falsely accused and imprisoned, Joseph encounters Pharaoh's cupbearer and baker, who are troubled by their own dreams. In Genesis 40:8, Joseph acknowledges the divine source of his gift, saying, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams." He accurately interprets their dreams, predicting the cupbearer's restoration to his position and the baker's execution.

Joseph's reputation as an interpreter reaches Pharaoh, who is troubled by dreams that none of his magicians can explain. In Genesis 41:15-16, Pharaoh says to Joseph, "I have had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it." Joseph responds, "I cannot do it, but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires." Joseph interprets Pharaoh's dreams of seven fat cows and seven lean cows, and seven healthy heads of grain and seven thin heads of grain, as a divine revelation of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of severe famine.

Impact and Significance

Joseph's interpretation of Pharaoh's dreams leads to his appointment as second-in-command over Egypt, tasked with preparing for the impending famine. His strategic planning and management during the years of plenty ensure that Egypt not only survives the famine but becomes a source of sustenance for surrounding nations, including his own family. This fulfillment of Joseph's earlier dreams demonstrates God's providential care and the unfolding of His plan for the Israelites.

Joseph's interpretations highlight the biblical theme of God's sovereignty and His ability to work through individuals to accomplish His purposes. Joseph's account serves as a testament to faithfulness, integrity, and the belief that God can use even the most adverse circumstances for good. His life exemplifies the principle found in Genesis 50:20, where Joseph tells his brothers, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."

Theological Reflections

Joseph's gift of interpretation is seen as a divine endowment, emphasizing the belief that true wisdom and understanding come from God. His reliance on God for interpretations underscores the importance of humility and recognition of God's ultimate authority. Joseph's account is often viewed as a foreshadowing of Christ, who also suffered unjustly and was exalted to a position of authority, providing salvation to many.
