In biblical theology, the heart is often seen as the center of human will, emotion, and intellect. It is the seat of moral and spiritual life, reflecting the true nature of a person. The unregenerate heart, in particular, is depicted in Scripture as inherently malicious and deceitful, a condition that underscores humanity's need for divine redemption.
The prophet Jeremiah provides a stark description of the unregenerate heart: "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (
Jeremiah 17:9). This verse highlights the intrinsic deceitfulness and incurable nature of the heart without divine intervention. The unregenerate heart is not only deceitful but also desperately wicked, indicating a profound moral corruption that affects all aspects of human life.
In the New Testament, Jesus further elaborates on the condition of the unregenerate heart. In the Gospel of Mark, He states, "For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly" (
Mark 7:21-22). This passage lists a litany of sins that originate from the heart, emphasizing that the source of human wickedness is internal rather than external. The unregenerate heart is the wellspring of evil actions and thoughts, revealing its malicious nature.
The Apostle Paul also addresses the state of the unregenerate heart in his epistle to the Romans. He writes, "Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit. The venom of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery lie in their wake, and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes" (
Romans 3:13-18). This passage paints a vivid picture of the destructive and malicious tendencies of those with unregenerate hearts, who live in rebellion against God and His righteousness.
The unregenerate heart is also characterized by its resistance to God's truth and its inclination towards idolatry. In
Romans 1:21-23, Paul describes how humanity, despite knowing God, failed to honor Him and instead became futile in their thinking, with their foolish hearts darkened. "Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles" (
Romans 1:22-23). This exchange reveals the heart's propensity to turn away from the Creator and towards created things, further illustrating its malicious nature.
The unregenerate heart's malice is not only directed towards God but also towards fellow human beings. In 1
John 3:12, the apostle warns believers not to be like Cain, "who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil, while those of his brother were righteous" . Cain's actions exemplify the enmity and hatred that can reside in an unregenerate heart, leading to violence and destruction.
Throughout Scripture, the unregenerate heart is depicted as fundamentally opposed to God's will and purposes. It is a heart that is in desperate need of transformation, a transformation that can only be accomplished through the regenerative work of the Holy Spirit.
