The term "sacrificeth" is an archaic form of the verb "sacrifice," which appears in various translations of the Bible, including older versions like the King James Version. In the context of the Bible, to "sacrifice" generally means to offer something valuable to God as an act of worship, atonement, or thanksgiving. Sacrifices are a central theme throughout the Scriptures, reflecting humanity's relationship with God and the need for atonement and reconciliation.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, sacrifices were a fundamental aspect of the Israelites' worship and covenant relationship with God. The sacrificial system was established in the Mosaic Law, primarily detailed in the books of Leviticus, Exodus, and Deuteronomy. Sacrifices were offered for various purposes, including sin offerings, burnt offerings, peace offerings, and thanksgiving offerings.

Leviticus 1:3-4 describes the burnt offering: "If one's offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to offer an unblemished male. He must present it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, that he may be accepted by the LORD. He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, so that it may be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him."

The act of sacrificing an animal symbolized the transfer of sin from the individual to the animal, which was then offered to God. This practice underscored the seriousness of sin and the need for a substitute to bear the penalty of sin, foreshadowing the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

New Testament Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the concept of sacrifice is fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The sacrificial system of the Old Testament pointed forward to the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus would make on the cross. Hebrews 10:10 states, "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

Jesus is described as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). His sacrifice was once and for all, rendering the Old Testament sacrificial system obsolete. The New Testament emphasizes that believers are no longer required to offer animal sacrifices, as Christ's sacrifice is sufficient for the atonement of sins.

Spiritual Sacrifices

While the physical act of sacrificing animals is no longer required, the New Testament speaks of spiritual sacrifices that believers are to offer. Romans 12:1 exhorts, "Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship."

Believers are called to live lives of holiness and service, offering themselves to God in gratitude for His mercy and grace. This spiritual act of worship is a response to the ultimate sacrifice made by Christ and reflects a life transformed by the Holy Spirit.

Conclusion

The concept of "sacrificeth" in the Bible encompasses the historical practice of offering sacrifices under the Old Covenant and its fulfillment in the New Covenant through Jesus Christ. The transition from physical to spiritual sacrifices highlights the transformative power of the Gospel and the believer's call to live a life of worship and service to God.
