Faith, a central tenet of Christian doctrine, finds its object in the Gospel—the good news of Jesus Christ. The Gospel is the divine message of salvation, encapsulating the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and it serves as the foundation upon which believers place their trust and hope.

The Gospel as the Object of Faith

The Gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16). It is through the Gospel that the righteousness of God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last (Romans 1:17). This message of salvation is not merely a set of doctrines but the living and active word of God that transforms lives.

Faith in the Person and Work of Christ

Central to the Gospel is the person and work of Jesus Christ. Faith is directed towards Him, acknowledging His divinity, His atoning sacrifice, and His resurrection. As stated in John 3:16 , "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." This belief in Christ as the Son of God and Savior is the essence of the Gospel message.

The Gospel's Call to Faith

The Gospel calls individuals to repentance and faith. Mark 1:15 records Jesus' proclamation: "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel." This call to faith is an invitation to trust in the redemptive work of Christ and to enter into a restored relationship with God.

Faith and the Promise of the Gospel

The Gospel promises eternal life and reconciliation with God to those who believe. Ephesians 1:13 states, "And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit." This assurance of salvation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit are integral to the believer's faith in the Gospel.

The Gospel's Role in Sustaining Faith

The Gospel not only initiates faith but also sustains it. Colossians 1:23 exhorts believers to "continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope of the gospel you heard." The Gospel is the source of hope and strength for the believer, providing the foundation for a life of faithfulness and obedience to God.

Faith and the Proclamation of the Gospel

Believers are called to share the Gospel, as faith comes from hearing the message (Romans 10:17). The proclamation of the Gospel is an act of faith, trusting that God will work through His word to bring others to salvation. This evangelistic mission is a response to the Great Commission, where Jesus commands His followers to "go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).

In summary, the Gospel is the primary object of Christian faith, encompassing the message of Jesus Christ's redemptive work and the promise of eternal life. It is through faith in the Gospel that believers are justified, sanctified, and ultimately glorified, living in the hope and assurance of God's unfailing promises.
