Jerusalem holds a central place in the narrative of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, particularly as the location where He was put to death. The city, known as the spiritual and political heart of Israel, was the setting for the culmination of Jesus' earthly ministry and His sacrificial death, which is foundational to Christian theology.

The Passion Week in Jerusalem

The events leading to the crucifixion of Jesus are often referred to as the Passion Week, beginning with His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. As recorded in the Gospels, Jesus entered the city riding on a donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. The people greeted Him with shouts of "Hosanna!" and laid palm branches before Him (Matthew 21:1-11).

The Last Supper and Betrayal

In Jerusalem, Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples, instituting the Lord's Supper as a new covenant in His blood (Luke 22:19-20). It was during this meal that Jesus predicted His betrayal by Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve (Matthew 26:21-25).

The Arrest and Trials

Following the Last Supper, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. It was there that He was arrested by a mob led by Judas (Matthew 26:47-56). Jesus was then taken to the high priest Caiaphas and later to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. Despite finding no fault in Him, Pilate succumbed to the pressure of the crowd and sentenced Jesus to be crucified (John 19:1-16).

The Crucifixion

Jesus was led out of Jerusalem to Golgotha, also known as the Place of the Skull, where He was crucified between two criminals (Luke 23:33). The crucifixion of Jesus is a pivotal event, as it is believed to be the atoning sacrifice for the sins of humanity. The Gospel of John records Jesus' final words on the cross: "It is finished" (John 19:30), signifying the completion of His redemptive work.

The Burial

After His death, Jesus' body was taken down from the cross and laid in a tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea, a secret disciple of Jesus (John 19:38-42). The burial took place in a garden near the site of the crucifixion, fulfilling the prophecy that He would be with the rich in His death (Isaiah 53:9).

Significance

The death of Christ in Jerusalem is central to Christian belief, representing the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and the establishment of a new covenant between God and humanity. The events surrounding His death are commemorated annually during Holy Week, culminating in the celebration of Easter, which marks His resurrection.
