The Earth: God: Supports

The concept of God supporting the Earth is a theme that runs throughout the Bible, reflecting the belief in God's sovereign power and providential care over creation. This idea is rooted in the understanding that God is not only the Creator but also the Sustainer of the universe.

Creation and Sustenance

The Bible begins with the affirmation of God's creative power in Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." This foundational statement sets the stage for understanding God's ongoing relationship with the Earth. The Earth is not a self-sustaining entity; rather, it is upheld by God's continuous involvement.

In Colossians 1:16-17, the Apostle Paul writes, "For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." This passage emphasizes that Christ, as part of the Godhead, is integral to the sustaining of all creation, including the Earth.

God's Sovereignty and Control

The Psalms frequently highlight God's sovereign control over the Earth. Psalm 24:1 declares, "The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein." This verse underscores the belief that the Earth belongs to God, and He exercises authority over it.

Furthermore, Psalm 104 provides a poetic depiction of God's provision and care for the Earth. Verses 5-9 describe how God established the Earth on its foundations, ensuring its stability: "He set the earth on its foundations, never to be moved." This imagery conveys the idea that the Earth is secure because of God's sustaining power.

God's Provision and Care

The Bible also speaks of God's provision for the Earth and its inhabitants. In Acts 14:17, Paul and Barnabas remind the people of Lystra, "Yet He has not left Himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; He provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy." This passage highlights God's ongoing care and provision, which are essential for the sustenance of life on Earth.

In Matthew 6:26, Jesus teaches about God's care for creation, saying, "Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns—and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" This teaching reassures believers of God's attentive care for all His creation, including the Earth.

God's Promise and Faithfulness

The Bible also contains promises regarding God's faithfulness in sustaining the Earth. In Genesis 8:22, after the flood, God makes a covenant with Noah, stating, "As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall never cease." This promise reflects God's commitment to maintaining the order and cycles of the natural world.

In Hebrews 1:3, it is affirmed that Christ "upholds all things by His powerful word." This statement reinforces the belief that the Earth and all creation are sustained by the divine word and power of God.

Through these scriptures, the Bible presents a consistent message of God's active role in supporting and sustaining the Earth. This understanding calls believers to trust in God's providence and to recognize His authority over all creation.
