The Sabbath: Blessedness of Keeping

The Sabbath, a day of rest and worship, holds a significant place in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Observed on the seventh day of the week, it is a time set apart for rest and spiritual reflection, as commanded by God. The concept of the Sabbath is deeply rooted in the creation narrative and the Ten Commandments, and its observance is associated with numerous blessings.

Biblical Foundation

The origin of the Sabbath is found in the creation account in Genesis. After six days of creation, God rested on the seventh day, blessing and sanctifying it. Genesis 2:2-3 states, "And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing, so on that day He rested from all His work. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished."

The Sabbath commandment is reiterated in the Decalogue, where it is enshrined as the fourth commandment. Exodus 20:8-11 instructs, "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy."

Blessings of Observance

The observance of the Sabbath is associated with spiritual and physical blessings. Isaiah 58:13-14 highlights the joy and delight found in keeping the Sabbath: "If you turn your foot from breaking the Sabbath, from doing as you please on My holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD’s holy day honorable, if you honor it by not going your own way or seeking your own pleasure or speaking idle words, then you will delight yourself in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the land and feed you with the heritage of your father Jacob. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

The Sabbath serves as a sign of the covenant between God and His people, as seen in Exodus 31:16-17 : "The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it as a lasting covenant for the generations to come. It is a sign between Me and the Israelites forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed."

Spiritual Renewal and Rest

The Sabbath provides an opportunity for spiritual renewal and rest, allowing believers to focus on their relationship with God. In Mark 2:27 , Jesus emphasizes the purpose of the Sabbath: "Then Jesus declared, 'The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.'" This underscores the Sabbath as a gift for humanity's benefit, offering rest from labor and a time to draw closer to God.

A Day of Worship and Community

The Sabbath is also a time for communal worship and fellowship. In the New Testament, the early Christians gathered on the Sabbath for prayer and teaching. Acts 16:13 describes such a gathering: "On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate along the river, where it was customary to find a place of prayer. After sitting down, we spoke to the women who had gathered there."

Conclusion

The Sabbath remains a vital aspect of Christian life, offering a rhythm of rest and worship that aligns with God's design for creation. Its observance brings blessings of joy, spiritual renewal, and a deeper connection with the divine.

Isaiah 56:2,6
Blessed is the man that does this, and the son of man that lays hold on it; that keeps the sabbath from polluting it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil.
