The Lord's Day

In the New Testament, the Sabbath is often referred to as "The Lord's Day." This term is used to signify the day of Christ's resurrection, which occurred on the first day of the week. Revelation 1:10 mentions, "On the Lord’s day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet."

The early Christian church began to observe the first day of the week, Sunday, as a day of worship and rest in honor of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This shift is noted in Acts 20:7 : "On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight."

Theological Significance

The Sabbath, as the Lord's Day, is a time for believers to rest from their labors and focus on spiritual matters. It serves as a reminder of God's creation, His deliverance, and the rest that is found in Christ. Hebrews 4:9-10 emphasizes this spiritual rest: "There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His."

Observance and Practice

The observance of the Sabbath varies among Christian denominations. Some maintain a strict adherence to Saturday as the Sabbath, while others observe Sunday as the Lord's Day. Regardless of the specific day, the principle of setting aside time for rest and worship remains central.

The Sabbath, as the Lord's Day, continues to be a vital aspect of Christian life, providing an opportunity for believers to pause, reflect, and renew their relationship with God.
