The Beginning
(Hebrews 11:1–3)

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through Him, and apart from Him was not even one thing made that has been made. 4In Him was Life; and the Life was the light of men. 5And the light shines in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not.

The Witness of John

6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7The same came for a testimony, that he might testify concerning the Light, that all might believe through him. 8He was not the Light; but he came, that he might testify concerning the Light.

9He was the true Light That lighteth every man coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world knew Him not. 11He came to His own possessions, and those who were His own received Him not. 12But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those believing in His name; 13who were born, not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word Became Flesh

14And the Word became flesh, and tabernacled among us, (and we beheld His glory?glory as of the Only Begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth. 15John testifies concerning Him, and has cried, saying, "This was He of Whom I said, 'He That cometh after me hath become before me, because He was before me;'" 16because out of His fulness we all received, and grace for grace: 17because the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, Who is in the bosom of the Father, He declared Him.

The Mission of John the Baptist
(Matthew 3:1–12; Mark 1:1–8; Luke 3:1–20)

19And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent forth priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, "Who are you?" 20And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, "I am not the Christ." 21And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he says, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No." 22They said therefore, to him, "Who are you? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say concerning yourself?" 23He said, "'I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as said Isaiah the prophet.

24And they had been sent from among the Pharisees. 25And they asked him, and said to him, "Why, then, do you immerse, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" 26John answered them, saying, "I immerse in water: in your midst standeth One Whom ye know not? 27the One coming after me, the latchet of Whose sandal I am not worthy to unloose." 28These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was immersing.

Jesus the Lamb of God
(Matthew 3:13–17; Mark 1:9–11; Luke 3:21–22)

29On the morrow he sees Jesus coming to him, and he says, "Behold, the Lamb of God Who taketh away the sin of the world! 30This is He of Whom I said, 'After me cometh a Man Who hath become before me, because He was before me.' 31And I knew Him not; but, that He might be manifested to Israel, for this cause I came immersing in water." 32And John testified, saying, "I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of Heaven, and He abode upon Him. 33And I knew Him not; but He who sent me to immerse in water, He said to me, 'Upon Whomsoever you shall see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, the Same is He Who immerseth in the Holy Spirit.' 34And I have seen, and have testified, that This is the Son of God."

The First Disciples
(Matthew 4:18–22; Mark 1:16–20; Luke 5:1–11)

35Again, on the morrow, John was standing, and two of his disciples; 36and, looking upon Jesus as He was walking, says, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" 37And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus. 38And Jesus, turning and beholding them following, saith to them, "What are ye seeking?" They said to Him, "Rabbi," (which, being translated, means Teacher), "where abidest Thou?" 39He saith to them, "Come and ye shall see." They came, therefore, and saw where He was abiding, and they abode with Him that day: it was about the tenth hour. 40Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard it from John, and followed Him. 41He first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, "We have found the Messiah," (which, being translated, is Christ). 42He led him to Jesus. Jesus looking on him, said, "You are Simon, the son of John; you shall be called Cephas," (which is translated Peter).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43On the morrow, He wished to go forth into Galilee; and He findeth Philip, and saith to him, "Follow Me." 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip finds Nathanael, and says to him, "We have found Him of Whom Moses in the law and the prophets wrote?Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of Joseph." 46And Nathanael said to him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" Philip says to him, "Come and see." 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and He saith to him, "Behold, an Israelite, indeed, in whom there is no guile!" 48Nathanael says to Him, "Whence knowest Thou me?" Jesus answered, and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49Nathaniel answered Him, "Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God; Thou art the King of Israel." 50Jesus answered, and said to him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." 51And He saith to him, "Verily, verily, I say to you, ye shall see Heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
