Jaziz the Hagrite
Jaziz is identified as a Hagrite, a group mentioned in the Bible as descendants of Hagar, the Egyptian maidservant of Sarah and mother of Ishmael. The Hagrites were known to be nomadic herdsmen, which aligns with Jaziz's role in managing flocks. This connection to Hagar and Ishmael highlights the diverse backgrounds of those serving in King David's administration, reflecting the fulfillment of God's promise to Hagar that her descendants would be numerous (Genesis 16:10).

was in charge of the flocks.
Flocks were a significant part of the economy in ancient Israel, providing wool, milk, and meat. Being in charge of the flocks was a position of responsibility and trust, indicating Jaziz's competence and reliability. This role required knowledge of animal husbandry and the ability to manage resources effectively. The mention of flocks also connects to biblical themes of shepherding, a metaphor often used for leadership, including Jesus as the Good Shepherd (John 10:11).

All these officials
The passage refers to a list of officials who managed various aspects of King David's property and resources. This organizational structure reflects the administrative sophistication of David's kingdom, which was necessary for maintaining order and prosperity. It also demonstrates the importance of delegation and the use of skilled individuals to manage different sectors of the kingdom.

were in charge of King David’s property.
King David's property included vast lands, livestock, and resources, which required careful management to ensure the kingdom's stability and growth. The officials' roles in overseeing these assets highlight the wealth and power of David's reign. This stewardship of resources can be seen as a type of Christ's future kingdom, where He will reign with perfect justice and order. The management of property also underscores the biblical principle of stewardship, where individuals are entrusted with resources to manage for God's glory.

Leadership and Delegation
Effective leadership involves delegating responsibilities to trustworthy individuals. David's administration exemplifies the importance of building a team to manage various aspects of life and ministry.

Heritage and Identity
Understanding our spiritual heritage can enrich our faith journey. The mention of Jaziz the Hagrite reminds us of the diverse backgrounds that contribute to God's account.

Preparation for Greater Roles
Just as David's early life as a shepherd prepared him for kingship, God uses our current circumstances to prepare us for future roles. Embrace your current season as preparation for what God has planned.

Trust in God's Provision
The management of flocks and resources in David's kingdom reflects God's provision. Trust that God will provide for your needs as you faithfully steward what He has given you.(31) And over the flocks.--Of sheep and goats.

Jaziz the Hagerite.--See 1Chronicles 5:10-19, for the conquest of East Gilead, the home of the Hagrim, or "Hagerites," by the tribe of Reuben, in the days of Saul. David's herds of camels and flocks of small cattle may have grazed in the pastures east of the Jordan, under the charge of his Bedawi overseers.

All these were the rulers of the substance which was king David's.--The word rendered "rulers" is s?rim, "captains" or "princes." (See 1Chronicles 27:22.) The same term is translated "stewards" in 1Chronicles 28:1.

Substance (r?k-sh) is an old word, denoting especially the moveable wealth of a nomad chief. (Comp. Genesis 12:5; Genesis 14:21.) The wealth of David consisted partly of flocks and herds, but partly also of the produce of husbandry, and, no doubt, of commerce. (See 1Chronicles 14:1; 1Chronicles 22:4.) The period of the kings saw Israel a settled nation, that had exchanged the purely nomad life for an ordered social existence. . . .

Verse 31. - For the Hagerite tribe, see 1 Chronicles 5:10, 18-22. For the rulers of the substance, the Hebrew words are שָׂרֵי הָרְכּוּשׁ. The number of them adds up again to twelve; Keil justly supposes that the two named in ver. 25 were those principal officers to whom the other ten delivered the proceeds of their respective charges.
